Do I have nits or am I mad?

Both dcs caught nits 4 weeks ago. I combed live lice out of their hair - 12 out of 8 year old and 6 out of 6 year old - i treated twice and they are definitely clear now. My head was insanely itchy but couldn't see any lice when using the comb. I wash and straighten every 2 days so probably kept it at a minimum I thought. My head is still bloody itchy after 4 bloody weeks. I have treated myself 4 times. I do have long hair but I see nothing when using the nit comb. Its making me feel ill - am due to get hair cut tomorrow and terrified they will escort me out for being nit ridden. Arrrrrgggh!

If you are thinking about nits a lot I do think it can make your head itch

I think once they have been spotted and dealt with you become a bit obsessed with them. My daughter only has to flick her hair back and I rummaging through her scalp like a chimp on speed.

Could you perhaps have had an allergic reaction to the nit treatment? Hence the itchy scalp but no lice or nits to be found. Or it could just be thinking about them combined with frequent nit comb scalp scraping has left your scalp feeling overly sensitive.

For future nit/lice outbreaks I highly recommend the nitty gritty comb alongside the treatments/shampoos etc. Expensive but worth it as it pulls out every last trace of the little blighters and their eggs.

Is there any chance you could get someone to check your head before you go to the salon? A similar thing happened to a close friend but it turned out that she was so anxious about the nits returning that she imagined the itch. Hard to understand but it happened.

I hope you get it sorted. Nits are horrible and most families suffer it at some point.

Has using the treatment that much made your scalp sensitive or dry maybe sounds more likely than any nits surving the comb and all the treatments

Its probably psychological. My DDs had nits so many times and it always made me itchy even when I didn't have them. I became a bit obsessed always watching them for scratching or signs, but they had them so often it drove me a bit mad! Your DC are the perfect nit magnet age but thankfully as they get older they don't seem to catch them any more.

I have exactly this right now I couldn't tell you how many times I have treated my hair. DH has checked and says I'm clear and to be honest I've treated so many times surely I can't have any. DD I know is clear because I comb her hair through every evening. But the itching is driving me insane. I have sensitive skin and I do think it's the treatment that's reacted to my scalp. But I feel so paranoid.

If you straighten your hair every couple of days I can assure you that you do not have nits. The staighteners fry the eggs. My girls used to get them constantly and I never suffered with them due to regular straightening. As soon as I ditched my GHDs I started catching them! I have since used straighteners on my girls after treating their hair once to get rid of life lice, as I hate the idea of leaving them for a week before treating them again - I don't want to wait for all the eggs to hatch and give them a chance to move on to other people's heads! So trust me, you are fine!
