AIBU?

To not get dd a birthday cake?

She's about to be 11. She hasn't been very well and has very little appetite Sad she doesn't like cake much anyway. I asked her what type of birthday cake she might like and she says she doesn't want one at all!

It feels a bit miserable not to get her one. Would you make one anyway? Or do you have any ideas for alternatives?

Aww bless her. Ask her what she fancies and just jazz it up for her. If she doesn't like cake then she don't like cake!

I've cream cake?
Cookie 'cake ' - places like Millies do huge ones with happy birthday iced on.

We all love birthday cake in this house, so to me it would seem strange not to have one. However, there's no point if she doesn't want one. As a starting point, what does she like? Perhaps we could come up with ideas from there.

Perhaps make a cake/tower out of sweeties or a giant Millie's birthday cookie works a treat with my ds who doesn't like cake

She says she doesn't want anything Sad She's a bit odd about not wanting any fuss

She does love ice cream! An ice cream cake is a good idea! Can you buy them?

What DOES she like? A big pile of that with a candle in it?
It doesn't need to be a cake, but if here is a good stuff she likes, work on that to make an "occasion plate" for her birthday - and it doesn't need to be sweet.

Or a tiny fairycake with a candle, if a birthday cake is required without masses of cake.

I hated birthday cake, still not a massive fan, I used to get a special lunchbox with all my favourite things in or if it was a weekend my favourite dinner and the table would have happy birthday banner on and a candle to blow out. If she's not feeling great and low appetitive perhaps go for just a savoury meal but make it special, candles, sing happy birthday, decorate the kitchen?

Oh, cross posts,. Sorry.

Basking Robins do ice team cakes here. Have you got a shop near you? Or maybe ask at any local icecream shop?

Ice cream cake?

A batch of mini muffins (maybe with some fruit in such as raspberries) arranged in two 1 shapes on a plate?

Some sort of layered jelly (more digestible?) with fruit arranged in a 11 shape in top layer?

One tiny (lemon drizzle) cupcake with candle just to mark the day?

Hope she feels better soon!

Can you still buy Vienetta? That might be retro and fun.

I've found a recipe online. Thanks. Still not sure she'll like it but it sounds delicious!

my dd wasn't well on her birthday either, and she doesn't really like birthday cakes, this year she chose one of those cupcake selections from sainburys, they cost £6 and were really nice, have you thought about something like that? or just give her a bowl of jelly and ice cream Smile

Thank you. She does like lemon drizzle cake (or she used yo) so the lemon cupcakes are a good idea.

My daughter is not a cake fan but loves the idea of a birthday cake. She spend ages looking up cakes on Google to choose her cake and loves the blowing out of the candles etc. Treat it as part of the birthday celebration than 'cake'

Ah, dd does not like the whole singing, celebration bit. It's quite hard to make it festive!

My mate had a massive pork pie with candles on one year. He was ill and couldn't stand the taste of sweet things.

My nephew doesn't like birthday cake, he has a cheesecake each birthday but no singing is allowed! I think he's just at a funny teen age.

Cupcakes.
Big cookie
Swiss roll ice cream bowl cake ( really simple to make www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/winter_swiss_roll_bowl_27318)
Cheesecake
Pancake cake? ( basically a pile of chocolate pancakes but looks impressive, really simple to do)
Scones?

If she's more savoury than sweet? Could do a batch of savoury muffins?

That Swiss roll cake looks perfect! Easy too, so if she hates it I won't feel resentful lol.

An ice cream cake sounds like a good idea. Baskin Robbins stores sell them, but not sure how many there are in the UK (I only know of one in London).

I wasn't even asked if I wanted a birthday cake for my last birthday, I thought it was a given. My husband got a few small cupcakes from Waitrose, decorated them with candles and that was it. I was mortified!

Or a cake made of cheese like they sometimes have at weddings? If not too pricey.

I am going to do the Swiss roll cake above, but with a vanilla cake and ice cream filling. With a sparkler and candles Smile

Or an alternative to the pancake stack someone suggested above, how about a stack of thin plate-like meringues? You can put cream or ice cream and fruit between the layers and drizzle with fruit coulis / chocolate sauce.....

I was going to say stick a candle in a vienetta but no good if she doesn't like chocolate.

How about making your own ice cream sundaes, couple of tubs of her fave ice cream, squirty cream and a bunch of sweets and fruit and stick an indoor sparkler in it.

I hate cake. Always have . Love loads of other crap but just not cake. The whole candles thing is fun as long as the actual cake eating is done by others.
