Ds is nearly 2, and doesn't tolerate dairy. This isn't a problem until we go out to eat. Often choose locally run places, tend to lean towards to the organic/vegetarian/homemade type places as that's my preference. He'll eat anything so often shares mine, which I ask for with no butter. But recently hes decided hes a big boy now and doesn't want to share. This is an example of a regular and annoying occurrence:
He loves scrambled egg so I asked for that at a local cafe. Asked if it was possible to just scramble the egg, no milk or butter added -no problem she said. I went on to explain he doesnt eat dairy and she hesitated... I thought she was going to worry about cross contamination but no. Her question was 'but eggs are dairy'

Now my aibu is everytime this happens (which is half the time and we go out a couple of times a week) can I just smile and remind them of basic animal knowledge?
I'm sure there must be a witty reply I can use without making them feel dense.
(but seriously where the actual fuck do they think eggs come from?)

You don't have to come up with anything witty just say 'eggs aren't dairy'

Damia · 25/04/2017 07:39

I would probably say he's allergic to cows milk or something instead. It's obviously the word dairy bringing to mind a farm. They'd probably be worried about bacon too lol

EsmereldaMargaretNoteSpelling · 25/04/2017 07:39

Save your energy and simply say "Actually they're not, so just the eggs please" It's going to be a long road, dont waste headspace! Some people don't want to understand and its not necessarily your job to educate the whole world. Protect your soon obviously, but don't make it more of a chore than it already is.

wictional · 25/04/2017 07:43

(Scrambled) egg on my face! I work at a café and always point out to dairy-intolerant people that the food they're ordering contains eggs Confused I always thought eggs were in the dairy triangle of food graphs!

I have a masters degree so I would hope I'm not stupid...

treaclesoda · 25/04/2017 07:44

It never fails to amaze me how many people think eggs are dairy. It truly is one of life's great mysteries.

Is it because people have no connection with where their food comes from?

Moanyoldcow · 25/04/2017 07:44

Not unless chickens are cows!

Empireoftheclouds · 25/04/2017 07:45

Surely that's just one person? It's not going to be ongoing?

Sunshineandlaughter · 25/04/2017 07:45

I would have thought eggs dairy too. So yes you are being unreasonable because it's you not explaining it properly - say he can't have anything with cows milk in instead

treaclesoda · 25/04/2017 07:46

She shouldn't need to explain that eggs don't come from cows Confused

RebelRogue · 25/04/2017 07:46

Why do people believe eggs are dairy? What's the logic behind it?!?

luckylucky24 · 25/04/2017 07:47

Sometimes things are obvious you overlook them.
Many people don't understand that white chocolate is not actually chocolate. I don't spend half my time educating them I just state the fact and move on!

Verticalvenetianblinds · 25/04/2017 07:47

I never have the same problem when ordering spaghetti Bolognese, and that's got cow meat in it (it is just the milk he cant take)
My reply is often eggs don't come from cows, it just feels a bit rude!
Oh wictional have I just given you a light bulb moment?! (but thankyou to being considerate to us cmpa parents!)

Sunshineandlaughter · 25/04/2017 07:48

No one thinks that eggs come from cows but eggs are frequently grouped in 'dairy' products - in supermarkets, in nutrition education etc so dairy often means more than just cows

Imfinehowareyou · 25/04/2017 07:49

YANBU but I remember really clearly from school (and from teaching Blush) a picture of eggs in the dairy section on a balanced plate picture. So we have all been taught this.

BoobleMcB · 25/04/2017 07:49

Unless that particular cafe uses cows eggs...

treaclesoda · 25/04/2017 07:49

White chocolate and chocolate is a bit different, since it is actually called chocolate, even if it's not.

Eggs aren't called dairy and aren't made from milk products.

Verticalvenetianblinds · 25/04/2017 07:49

And it happens regularly (but not when I order black coffee noone ever checks if id would like an egg in thatGrin)

OP posts:
fuzzywuzzy · 25/04/2017 07:51

I was taught at primary school that eggs were dairy.

I'm not stupid either, I guess people are just ensuring they're not putting your son at risk.

Imfinehowareyou · 25/04/2017 07:52

Obviously that have now been updated with the eggs in the protein section. Maybe people are remembering getting their eggs delivered by the milkman? [Grin]

treaclesoda · 25/04/2017 07:52

I've never seen a supermarket class eggs as dairy either. I've never even seen the eggs stored anywhere near the fridges in a supermarket.

In online shopping it might have 'eggs and dairy' as one of the menu options, but it also has things like 'rice and pasta' and no one argues that rice is actually classed as pasta.

Empireoftheclouds · 25/04/2017 07:53

My reply is often eggs don't come from cows, it just feels a bit rude it's also a crap reply. If you want to educate people regarding what is and isn't dairy, then don't limit your information to cows

titchy · 25/04/2017 07:53

Actually it's quite understandable - YABU.

You're assuming dairy means milk product, whereas a lot of people define dairy as milk AND EGG products. As others have said on food triangle illustrations eggs are usually in the dairy section.

Just say he's cows milk intolerant.

It happens to me too TBH - I say I'm vegetarian - they suggest fish. I just live with it and explain 'vegetarians don't eat meat or fish' or say (vegetarian - no meat or fish) hence yabu for not explaining it clearly

LauraMipsum · 25/04/2017 07:55

When I did my food hygiene certificate (nearly 20 years ago so I have no idea if this is still taught!) eggs were placed in the "dairy" categorisation for things like which chopping board to use Vertical so that might be why people working with food conflate them.

Frazzledmum123 · 25/04/2017 07:56

Oh dear, whilst reading your OP I was thinking 'why order eggs then?'Blush

Now you say it, its obvious though. I wonder if it's to do with veganism (if that's a word) being much bigger now?
