AIBU?

To think this should be banned?

NC for privacy reasons.

Now I work at a drive thru at a certain fast food restaurant and it is common place for people to be smoking in their cars at the window so the cigarettes are right in our face and the smoke blows right at us. Sometimes people even blow it out of the window/their mouths and right at you (though not on purpose I don't think).

AIBU to think that smoking while in a drive thru should be banned? I mean its awful working there when someone comes in and rolls down a window so a load of smoke comes at you or they're busy blowing it in your direction while you're trying to serve them and have to lean out of the window to take their money etc.

Agree but not ssure how you'd enforce it

Out2pasture · 25/04/2017 01:12

easy to enforce once a bylaw is in place banning smoking within a distance (example 10 feet of all food service establishments). all you need is to lobby and get no smoking regulations.

I think you need to take it up with your employer. May well be a breach of health and safety to have smoke blown in your face.

I do wonder if many smokers realise how bad it smells.

Completely agree. It also annoys me when people take a last drag before getting on a bus and blow it in the direction of the driver. I honestly think people don't realise they're doing it.

They need to ban smoking in cars.

Personally I think that smoking should be banned full stop. Its a disgusting, stinky, ugly antisocial habit and the people who do it are deluded that it A) Doesn't make them stink and B) Doesn't affect people around them, including family members who are watching them kill themselves, one disgusting drag at a time.

They need to ban smoking in cars. And it's been banned inside and people complain if people do it outside, and in cars, and in rented flats.

Where exactly should people smoke? I gave up 15 years ago and all this sanctimonious twaddle makes me want to light up.

Not the OP. You shouldn't have to breathe it at work.

YANBU OP. Smoking should be made illegal, full stop.

SpreadYourHappiness · 25/04/2017 01:41

MrsTerryPratchett Of course people complain about smoking in rented flats! You shouldn't be allowed to fuck up someone else's property over your own selfish habit.

You should be protected at work.

On work premises of course.

I've never thought of this as a problem, I'm a non-smoker, but it sounds awful because you are effectively trapped and can't move out of the smoke. I'm sure it hasn't occurred to most of the culprits either.

Definitely have a word or email your boss, but I'm afraid it would be difficult to police even if they do put up signs. You are likely to get a gobfull of abuse along with your smoke with depressing regularity if you politely ask people not to smoke.

It's been banned here (NSW) and nobody has an issue with it.

It's also illegal to smoke within 10m of a shop doorway, in a car with under 18s, in / around all govt buildings (including hospitals and schools) and on university campuses.

Yes, it's abit more complicated to find somewhere to smoke but why should other people suffer because I choose to smoke?

But do they not have to roll their window down to order first? At the drive in we use, you drive to Point A which is a microphone where you order and then to Point B to pick up and pay. So surely the smoke would dissipate between Point A and B? Or you could ask for a no smoking sign to b attached to the microphone?

CarolD would you like to have cigarette smoke blown into your face at work?

I wouldn't.

Spare could you approach your employer about appropriate signage at the drive through?

Thanks guys, it is difficult to deal with and really annoying when it happens all throughout the day.

I get people need to smoke someplace like their homes (not if rented unless with permission) however I think if you're like literally two feet away from a human who is serving you and cannot leave you shouldn't smoke.

I have asked the boss but they say the same thing about being able to police it. If it was me I would just tell them to their face its not allowed Grin I'm that type of person though. For now I just passive aggressively cough when they blow smoke (or that vape crap) at me haha!

I agree that employees should be protected. But smoking shouldn't be banned, all drugs should be legalized too.

If people want to kill them selves by smoking or drugs, that's their choice.

I'm pretty sure smokers aren't deluded and do know it.
I'm rather with mrs in this.
I think lots of things are antisocial, doesn't mean they should be banned Hmm

I don't know what you can do op.
It can't be nice for you, however i don't know how you would enforce it.i don't think people should be blowing it in your face though!
You could ask your manager about signs?

When it's affecting other people's health, that's when it becomes more than just antisocial.

"Where exactly should people smoke?" Away from non-smokers.

The person serving food at a fast food restaurant window is in their work environment just like anyone else. I don't know any work places where you can smoke now.

Talk to your employer OP.

caroldecker "Get over yourself." any reason you think the OP doesn't deserve a smoke-free work environment like the rest of us?

Ban smoking, lose £9bn a year net tax revenue (tobacco revenue less NHS costs, although NHS costs, social care and pension costs are saved as smokers die young).
So ban smoking and:

  1. Cut NHS spending by 8%
  2. Cut education by 11%
  3. Cut benefits by 11%
  4. Cut defence by 20%
