AIBU to loathe the Royal Family

The way the media is so gushing about everything Wills, Kate and Harry do, just been watching the evening news, there is a story about Wills and Kate doing a radio broadcast, makes me want to vomit..
And the issues about mental health - really? Do we need Royal 'endorsement' just to get more funding?

I think Harry could be utilized.

He seems to have his head screwed on and a bit of common sense. Whereas, William is just a prop to hang a suit on.

Mental Illness getting publicity is no bad thing though and they do both seem like nice blokes who want to help.

They are generally a waste of space I feel but I've got to admit I like Harry and yes, maybe a royal endorsement is what mental health services need! It can't hurt can it?

The fact they have got people talking about talking about mental health is fantastic. This is the second thread I seen recently using that as a stick to beat them with which I struggle to understand.

It shouldn't need an endorsement from anyone but if they can make people more aware and sympathetic re mh issues then good for them.

Looks like they are trying to turn tables and be useful

What's wrong with that? Op would you prefer they sit in a palace drinking tea 24/7?Hmm

They are a drain on our finances. I don't for one second swallow the "but they bring millions of £ss to the economy in terms of the tourism" blah blah that everyone uses to justify their state funding. People would still come to the UK even if we were a republic, which I wish we were.

My blood boils whenever I think about them.

Gotta say I'm not a great fan of the royals tbh find the whole notion in this day and age really stupid, but they do still garner attention and support for causes because people choose to care what they do and MH services need all the help they can get, whether that help should need the help of royals is another matter

Their PR is clearly working overtime since their reputation for being lazy and workshy culminated in dad-dancinggate, so I'm cynical of any charitable work they're doing right now as like Beckham it is probably for their own reputation!

too old for all this shit

I love them. They've lost their mother.

Not a royalist - I don't think anyone should be un-sackable (I'm looking at you, Prince Philip). However, I do like the younger generation. They seem to have a different viewpoint and ethic than eg Edward/Andrew/Margaret.

And anyone raising MH issues appropriately gets my vote.

I have nothing against the royals as people. I respect and admire the Queen. Will & Kate seem like nice people. Harry is a top lad.

It's the institution of the monarchy that I have an issue with. It's an absurd anachronism which should be abolished when Queenie dies. We should have a parliamentary democracy with an elected figurehead president, like Italy, Ireland or Germany.

You sound really unpleasant.

They're people, just like anybody else.

Loathing someone you've never even met, who has not actually committed genocide or something, says a lot more about you than about them.

I'd love to see a balance sheet of what they cost compared to what the 'tourism' brings in.

There's also foreign trade to consider. When DH worked in oil a royal visit to Baku eased some relationships and drummed up a lot of business.

I can't stand the royals as an institution and feel that it's only interesting and important from a historical point of view.

Who knows what they're like as people. Could be lovely, could be shit heads. It's irrelevant to me.

They've lost their mother Does no one even care about this? It's unusual. But we hear 'They're privileged!'. They'really not.

MH has been all over the media this week because of their public appearances and interviews. How is that loathesome?

YANBU to loathe the Royal Family as an institution. YA a little U if you loathe them all as people - some of them are well-intentioned and they have all very much been conditioned to their way of life. I am a republican, though, and would like to see the Royals' status (kindly) abolished.
