I loved The Owl Service by Alan Garner...there were others but I've forgotten them all!

Anything by lois duncan - especially the one about the cousin who was a witch, and also a book about a wooden doll called dido, set in wales, think it was called A candle in her room.

Audrey Rose .. was all about a girl my age (at the time) who may or may not have been the reincarnation of another (the titled name). Was good and just creepy enough (also spiked a lifelong interest in Reincarnation for me).

Also recall books by a John Saul ,, with titles like Cry for the Strangers, Punish the Sinners and Comes the Blind Fury . Creepy too

Lois Duncan "Stranger with my Face" scared the wits out of me 😀

Dean Koontz was just getting famous when I was a teen. I remember reading a lot of those.

Ann Pilling 's books - was the Witch of Largs one? - and something called (possibly) The Scarecrows. And the Alan Garner books!

Dean R Koontz and Stephen King for me, plus we had a bookshop which had 4 books for a £1 and they were all trashy American horror books! Some good some bad but I'd get 4-8 a week and work through those :)

I can recall one - Pig City!

Yep, Scarecrows - Robert Westall. Spooky in the extreme!

There was a book of short stories that I went back to time and again. I can't remember the title but it had a girl on a carousel horse on the cover and a story based around rosemary (for remembrance) in.
They were quite gentle spooky stories from what I remember. Otherwise I was just reading my parents James Herbert books!

Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House.

Can't read anything scary now, have turned into a wuss.

Cold I remember that one! Now I'll have to see if magic Amazon can remind me of the name...

I hope you do find it Code, Annoyingly I actually had the book until we moved house and I had a big clear out!

Stephen King's IT. I still hold my hair back when leaning over the sink.

I also loved Lois Duncan's "Killing Mr Griffin" and "Daughters of Eve".

As an early teen I loved all of the Point Horror books.

Mid-late teen I got through all of the current Stephen Kings

This might be my favourite thread ever! I had forgotten about Lois Duncan and how much I loved her! For a while, a friend and I would go to the library almost every day and I remember her reading Dean R Koontz, don't think I ever did. But I loved reading Stephen King and I am on the lookout for a copy of It at the moment, never read it and I want to before the remake movie is out in the Autumn!

I adored Christopher Pike books, they were really cool teen horror/murder books like a slightly more junior Stephen King

I used to devour those Collins horror story collections, there were others but can't remember them.
Dennis Wheatley 'the devil rides out' 'incubus' etc and Stephen King (still reading him now), Dean Koontz and James Herbert.

After falling out the reading habit have spent a year catching up on all of Dean Koontz books and newer Stephen King ones, sheer heaven😀

I came here to say Point Horror too! There were some other books by one of the authors, Caroline B. Cooney? Varying ratios of horror to thriller elements in those ones, though.

I loved "the vanished" by Celia Rees (took some googling to find what it was called!)
There was a series as well (about a hotel, as if that narrows it down!!), I'll see if I can find it...
