Conservative are obviously going to win. What's the point in doing this now?

I think it's mainly so May has the confirmation that the country is behind her with all the conflict and uncertainly over brexit and stuff

It's a power grab. With labour in a mess they can wipe them out and force through a hard right manifesto. Dictator May will then be able to do whatever she likes.

If I was charitable I'd say they're doing it out of the principle that she's the unelected (outside of her party) Prime mInister and with all the change in the country since Cameron was elected, they need a mandate from the people.
But I'm not charitable, and she's clearly doing it because Labour are in disarray and and the sooner the election is the better her chances of winning

I really hope they lose. I know it is doubtful.

The guy on the BBC News said the Lib Dems have said they will have a second brexit ref. Wouldn't that be good.

There are so many claims that she was not "elected" by the public. Also Labour in disarray and presumed Corbyn unelectable. Will be interesting if LibDems say they'll reverse Brexit!

Also would give her 5 years to sort out any Brexit deal rather than 3.

Her biggest opponent is not Labour, it's the SNP. She won't allow a second Scottish referendum, but by holding a general election they're hopeful of winning back some of the SNP's seats.

Sorry if I'm being thick but article 50 has already been triggered so would the lib dems really be able to reverse it?

She's hoping to destabilise Scotland and wipe out Labour whilst she's at it. Absolutely ruthless, can only hope against hope it will severely backfire on her. I doubt it, but will still hope.

Oh, I dunno. The way is Labour is going (from bad to worse), they'll be even less of an opposition in a year's time than they are now. Look at the whole recent Ken Livingstone fiasco.

I think she's doing it for a Brexit mandate.

Because She will win and then she can stay in power for 5 years.

Report
Vinorosso74 · 18/04/2017 11:22

She knows she will get elected (unfortunately) as she knows Jeremy Corbyn is not likely to get victory for Labour (he is a good MP but leader/PM no). God does that mean she'd be in power until 2022 rather than 2020????

I would like to know this.

She wants a larger majority and thinks she can win one while Labour are so weak nationally.

Report
user1491148352 · 18/04/2017 11:24

She will claim this is an endorsement of the Brexit mandate.

But that will be a lie.

With Labour in disarray and a six week lead time there is no time for an anti Brexit movement to organise.

Report
Havingahorridtime · 18/04/2017 11:24

She isn't an elected leader so it makes sense for her to call an election now whilst she is almost guaranteed to win by an enormous majority due to labour being in such a mess.
I have no idea who I will vote for. I have always been staunch labour but im not sure i can vote for Corbyn and there is no viable alternative for me. It might be the first time I choose to spoil my ballot paper.

Report
SchnooSchnoo · 18/04/2017 11:25

Basically if she waits until 2020 the shit will have hit the fan and she might not win. Right now Jeremy Corbyn is looking weak, so she'll probably win. It's tactical.

There's not a hope in hell that she will win back seat in Scotland. Most Scots don't want Brexit and the Tories are the ones who have brought it upon us.

Also she can hardly deny the Scots a referendum ( because it's destabilising ) while allowing voters in the rest of the country a democratic voice.

Report
MorrisZapp · 18/04/2017 11:26

Meanwhile the 55% of Scots who voted no, now have an opportunity to show Nicola Sturgeon that no, she does not have a mandate for another referendum.

Will there be a box marked 'anyone but the SNP'? Bring it on because I will tick the shit out of that.

Report
Batgirlspants · 18/04/2017 11:26

It's a clever move. Labour will be wiped out snd she's gambling that Scotland is fed up of divisions that the independance vote caused and may vote Tory. Lib Dems are a joke. Thry can't reverse Brexit article 50 has been triggered.

She will have 5 years and be in a stronger position.

And nothing yet from Corbyn how bloody typically slow.

Report
VladmirsPoutine · 18/04/2017 11:27

Hopefully they'll blow Labour out of the water which means Corbyn would have no option but to resign and give Labour the opportunity to rebuild itself as a credible opposition.
Did anyone see that photo of him standing next to a toilet cubicle wearing a cap and what appeared to be safety glasses Confused

We don't need one. It's a cynical attempt to extend Tory rule for as long as possible.

I voted green last time, but may vote Labour as I am mostly pro-Corbyn. Neither vote will count for anything as a nematode worm with a blue rosette would win here. My votes in GE are almost always a total waste due to our shitty system.

Report
WonderMike · 18/04/2017 11:28

Because she knows no one will want Corbyn in power.
