AIBU?

To ask you to help me please find a dress to wear at my cousin's wedding?

Hi everyone!

Sorry this is a bit of a boring AIBU!

My cousin's getting married this summer in a civil ceremony in a town hall, with a second bigger ceremony held abroad for later on in the summer.

The idea is that the town hall ceremony will be for close relatives, so some of her family and DP's family will be attending, with about ten people coming altogether. After the ceremony, they're planning to celebrate with a family meal at a nearby restaurant.

Would I be unreasonable to ask you to help me find a dress to wear for the ceremony please? I'm really hopeless at these kinds of things, and your help would be really appreciated! :)

For a bit of background, I'm in my mid-twenties. I'm 5ft (so really quite short!) and normally wear a size 8 to 10. I'm blonde with quite pale skin (I don't really tan, unfortunately!) and normally, for occasions like this, I like fitted dresses in colours like light and dark blue, pale pink, green etc.

Thanks very much everyone! :)

You're mid 20s and size 8-10 and can't find a dress?

Just go on asos!

Price range? Are you curvy, or more athletic build?

I like phase 8 sale for posh, am 5' 3" and curvy

Yep, this.

Personally I like Maje, Sandro, Kooples, Zadig and Voltaire if you're looking for ideas. you can search for second hand items on vestaire collective.

Hey OP that's not boring!

Give us some pointers on what colours/fabrics you like/prefer to avoid etc. Need shoes and jacket too or just a dress to go with existing accessories etc?

Perhaps ask HQ to move to style and beauty section for more appropriate traffic.

I like Ted Baker for this sort of occasion and your height and size would most definitely suit the way a lot of their occasion wear dresses are cut.

Agree with flyinggeese either ask for this to be moved or repost in Style and Beauty. The posters on there really helped me with a dress for my DD's wedding last year (I was in despair)

I am similar size (and a dress addict), I think the best proportion clothes for smaller frames are in phase eight, Karen millen, coast and whistles...but quite expensive so you might need ebay/sales. Alternatively dont rule out m&s (although you might come up a size smaller) warehouse and miss selfrige as sometimes they have cheaper but still appropriate wedding clothes.

Oh yes, ballpark budget?

Phase Eight or Coast. Some gorgeous stuff at both.

also bimba y lola and Claudie pierlot do nice things, tho a bit pricey. I think phase 8/coast/karen millen are lovely but possibly not right for a 20-something?

Thanks so much everyone! I really appreciate your help. And this is absolutely not a stealth boast (I'm not sure what I've got to be boasting about, to be honest!) I posted here to find out if anyone had any tips or ideas on possible dresses - was going to post in Style and Beauty but just posted here for traffic (hope that's okay!)

In terms of my budget, it would be around £50.

Just to give you a bit more details about my proportions, I've got a smallish waist and quite a small bust (going to a bra fitting tomorrow so will find out more precisely what it is then, but I'm not too sure of my size at the moment - I think it's around 34B?) and don't really like my stomach, thighs or bum(!) (ie. they're a bit podgy/flabby!)

I'd like to go for fairly pale and light colours - especially blues, greens and pinks. I really like lace dresses and fit&flare dresses with a fitted bodice that then 'flares' out from the waist down. Light fabrics would be great, as the wedding is probably going to be in quite hot weather (August in London), although I know we can never tell with British weather!! I'd love to re-use the dress if possible.

And yes please to help with shoes - I'd love some ideas if you've got any thoughts on shoes too :) I think heels would be good - perhaps mid-height? I'm not sure whether nude heels would be a good idea (the bride - my cousin - is wearing a Reiss white lace mini dress with nude heels), so I wouldn't want to 'upstage' her or anything, or copy her).

If it's not till August, I think you will be better off waiting for the sales at the end of June.

I doubt you're a 34B as a size 8/10!

I'm a size 16/18 and wearing a 36.

Yes was going to say, start with being measured properly for a bra. Im a 30 band and a size 10/12
Hopefully someone can link you up.

Although if you're being measured at M&S then you will probably come out with a 34B! Grin

Haha funnily enough I think the last bra fitting was in M&S - that explains it then Grin

I'm based in London, and have heard that Selfridges and John Lewis are both good for fittings, so I'm trying Selfridges tomorrow and then might compare at John Lewis.

You'll want something from Vesper or Paper Dolls at your age.

If you're wearing a 34B you're probably more like a 28DD/30D. Go to Bravissimo.

Hi everyone! Thanks so much again for all of your help and suggestions so far, I'm really grateful :) Just a quick update - I've found this dress here (with help from the Style and Beauty fashion fairy godmothers!) and these shoes, again with amazing help. I'd be really interested to know what you think of the dress and shoes :)

Ooh lovely very much yes to the dress. Very honest answer on the shoes is I would't go for 'pu' as that material can look a bit cheap (though some are OK, would need to see the shoes in real life) and I'd worry would spoil the outfit. If not avoiding leather on ethical grounds I'd say go for leather / suede. The style however is really pretty.
