To ask which interpretation of this conversation is right?

I was chopping banana in the kitchen for my porridge, and asked DH if toddler DS would like some banana too. DH replied that DS had eaten some banana before his breakfast.

How would you interpret that reply?

A) DS has had some banana and doesn't need any more.

B) DS enjoyed some banana this morning so would like some more.

DH and I interpreted the conversation in different ways, as above. I'll tell you which one I am when you tell me which one you think is unreasonable. I fully expect you all to agree with me. grin

Why didn't you just ask DH to expand on his reply, i.e., state whether toddler wants more banana? That way the interpretation becomes an irrelevancy.

Oh no pressure then! wink
I think A but as you ask I guess you thought B.

I'm not sure either is unreasonable as such, but I'd have interpreted it as A.

With any communication, it's how it is understood by the receiver that counts
It doesn't matter what the communicator intends to say, it's what is heard by the other person
I would interpret that conversation as no, he doesn't want banana as he has already had some

Justmadeperfectflapjacks Sat 15-Apr-17 10:01:59

Neither - you should have asked ds!! My ds never says no to banana however many slices he has had!!

A. Because you asked if he needed some but dh said ds already had some

NervousNellie29 Sat 15-Apr-17 10:02:40

It's not an answer to your question.

Depends on the tone of voice

Voice going down = he doesn't need any more, he's had some

Voice going up = he likes banana today, that's a good idea

I would guess A.

I find it really bugs me when I ask a direct question and they respond with a related response which isn't an answer to the question. This is a perfect example!
