AIBU?

To think people can be thoughtless and rude

So I went to a dinner party last night with 3 other couples do 8 people in total. DP and I rent but are priced out of housing market although we have saved and would love to buy.

The other 3 couples are all school parents and for the 3 hours we were there, all they talked about was how much their houses are worth, what renovations they are doing, decorating, the difficulties of choosing a new kitchen, how much their mortgage repayments are etc. Literally all night.

DP and I just sat there feeling inadequate and shit all night and couldn't contribute at all.

I don't begrudge anyone anything and I'm not ungracious or jealous or anything. It's just upset me.

And having thought about it more today, I now feel really pissed off. They know our situation so I feel like they could have tried to change the conversation so we could participate but it was 3 hours of houses.

Aibu to be pissed off? I feel like I don't want to socialise with them anymore.

They just sound a bit dull or one track- I don't think it's about you

It's what people talk about.
They most likely didn't think about it.
I can't have children but I don't get upset when people talk about their kids. It's part of their lives.

Was it really ALL night? Sounds grim.

Didn't you both try to turn the conversation at all? Try to introduce other subjects?

I don't think they did it deliberately but I do think that if you invite people to your house, surely you make an effort to include everyone in the conversation?
There wasn't much point us being there as we couldn't contribute

IME it is all people talk about there, I moved away Smile

I wouldn't take it personally, they probably weren't thinking about you. They do sound dull as hell though!

Six people literally sat all night talking about their houses and ignoring you??

Welshgirl2008 · 13/04/2017 18:51

And we did try a bit to talk about other stuff but it just kept coming back to houses

And No, not Surrey Grin

They probably have nothing else to talk about.

Too busy building conservatories to read a paper or pop out to a film.

You need more interesting friends.

I live in Surrey and we don't all talk about house prices!

God, that sounds boring.
It was certainly rude as they should have steered the conversion into a direction where everyone could contribute.
I wouldn't invite any of them back.

I do agree with the notion they sound dull i do find it a bit vulgar to talk of the cost of things in a party setting.

They sound boring. At least they could have bored you about their children. If it's any small consolation OP I miss the freedom of renting and find house renovating tedious and expensive.

It does sound a bit dull, but I'd think they got into the conversation and found common ground basically, so I'd assume a group which weren't particularly close mates.

They are also aware that our rent is high and that maybe we don't want to hear that their mortgage is £5 a month Sad

Sorry grilled Smile. I was joking but it is a bit of a joke I have with my DP when we go back to visit. " oh I wonder what they will be doing to their house now to add value or will they be thinking of moving to get in to the best school."

Yanbu. My perspective as someone who was a sofa surfer, rented, and now own my home outright, I think your friends sound insensitive, self absorbed and rather boring. They probably don't even think about your situation as if they did they wouldn't harp on like that. Next time speak up for yourself. You have NOT failed as a renter don't ever think that.

Try this: *Yawn. God, it must be shit having to think about all that rubbish. It's brilliant to be able to call our landlady/lord to sort everything out. Now, did anyone notice Trump starting a war with Russia recently?"

I ❤️Renting

I would probably feel annoyed as well, but more due to the boredom of it! It doesn't mean they were making a dig at you, though.

I ended up stuck in a conversation rut with one friend for a while, and all we ended up talking about was house prices and such. It was weird.

YANBU , your hosts, at least were inconsiderate to not realise how awkward this may have made you feel.

You are far from alone but I bet you felt differently that evening.

Sympathy with you OP - my friends all work in the same profession. Every night out is one long talk about their work which is nothing I have any knowledge about. They know nothing about mine so that's ignored. I have mentioned it to them in a lighthearted way and get 5mins respite.
I end up people watching.
