Cheese and Pickle Sandwich

If you were injured and laid up in bed, and requested said sandwich for lunch, would you expect the sandwich, or a tray bearing the bread, cheese, butter dish, pickle jar and a knife?

My bed is now full, full I tell you, of sodding crumbs. I've had to drag my sorry damaged arse out of bed to bat away the crumbs. Twice. I missed some the first time.

My, get you, poncing about in bed in the middle of the day on a weekday, demanding sandwiches to be brought to you fully constructed. Grin

Which fecker brought you a self assembly sandwich and why on earth didn't you send them back to the kitchen to do it properly in said room designed for the very purpose?

Who was the bearer of this tray? Could you not have said "I can't do that, you're going to have to make up the sandwich for me" when it arrived?

The only reason I can think of where this would have been acceptable is if you are very very particular over how your sandwiches are made

That sucks though, it's the gesture of making up and sandwich and cutting it in half that says "I care about you and i'm looking after you". Not shoving some stuff on a tray and expecting you to sort yourself out.

Mmm. Are you very fussy with your sandwiches? I dread making DH one as he accuses me of not buttering into the corners or there not being the right cheese:pickle ratio.

It was DH. He is perfectly capable of making it. No idea what possessed him.

But why didn't you just send him straight back downstairs?? You're gonna have to do a u-turn on that tray, buddy, what is this, a sandwich workshop? Or did you wake up and it was next to the bed? I just can't imagine accepting a tray like that from anyone. It takes 2 minutes to make a sandwich, bloody hell. Do you look after him when he is sick? When you ask for a cup of tea does he bring you the kettle & a teabag?

I'd expect it made for me. I was going to say maybe the person did not know there ratio of cheese to pickle you wanted, but if it's your DH he should bloody well know. He's obviously not making you sandwiches often enough!

PS: Get well soon!

I can imagine getting a "deconstructed" sandwich in some posh poncey restaurant. Perhaps he is trying to be trendy

I heard it rattling up two flights of stairs. I didn't have the heart to tell him to take it back down and return up two flights of stairs with the finished article. He has been waiting on me all day. And walking the dog. And ferrying DD around.

You'll be telling me to LTB next.

Last time I was ill I asked DP for an elderflower cordial.

I took a swig....he'd filled the whole glass with cordial. No water. It was not refreshing. Sad

They surely is a reason* for this, as it must have been harder to gather everything up, put it on a tray and slog it up 2 flights of stairs?

  • I use the word reason in it's loosest sense.

Oh, this is both awful for you and awful for me. I thought this was going to be a lovely thread about the joys of this sandwich. Heck, I even chose it over a thread above it about some poor soul looking for help with a serious issue. Now I have to go and get a snack. This has not gone at all well for me. (good luck to your OH and hope you feel better soon OP!)

Look a cheese and pickle sandwich in bed is always going to be a liability. So easy to lose track of a bit of Branston mid-chomp and think what unsavoury stains that will leave! Not to mention the difficulty in handling the cheese if it is grated. No chance you would contain all the contents in that scenario.

Plain ham or corned beef, sans pickle, would surely be a more practical meal option.

Wondering if we are married to the same person. I have never had a sandwich made for me in 16 years, don't think he knows how to do it.

Toast would arrive with chunks of hard butter pressed into the middle, making it soggy, gave up on toast. Can't tell the difference between cabbage and lettuce.

If I am ill I have to make do with something he can pick up from a shop.

I don't eat meat. It was crumbly Lancashire.

I might give tea a miss.

He made me a veggie bacon butty on Mothers' Day and put ketchup on it.

I never have ketchup on my veggie bacon.

Maybe it's some sort of protest.
