My 12 yo daughter has announced this today. I flatly refused and said that the 45min walk each way to school plus dance lessons plus walking round school plus pe is more than adequate for anyone.

Apparently the teacher said she needs to increase her exercise levels because she is clearly unfit because she's breathless in class. She has asthma which usually is under control but is exacerbated by exercise. No amount of exercise will make her fitter!

wibu to have serious words with school after Easter about this? They are aware dd has asthma.

That's several different things all together.

No, she doesn't need a fitbit to exercise (and if she has a smart phone they have exercise tracker apps)

The school need to know that asthma will make her wheezy even when she's doing a good amount of exercise.

However, increasing her exercise will make her fitter, even with asthma.

I would just email the teacher who said this, remind her that DD has asthma, and say that DD does plenty of exercise.

Dance lesson every day? Then yes. If not every day she probably could do with doing more.
Almost everyone could do with doing more!

I would check whether this was a blanket statement made to the whole class "some of you will need to increase the amount of exercise you do if you are out of breath" which she has taken as either a) including her or b) a way to get a Fitbit

Your body gets used to exercise. I used to walk 1 hour to school each way, carried a rucksack that weighed 5kg on a good day (we didn't have lockers), played hockey once a week and I was still overweight and unfit.

Don't dismiss the teacher's concerns just because your feelings are hurt. Go and speak to her if possible to find out why she's suggesting it (if she's even suggesting it all - your dd could be lying).

Well...yes it will. But she doesn't need a fitbit to do it, especially as it's not a 'fitness' issue but an asthma issue.

I've got Athsma and ive always been encouraged to do more exercise as it can help and sometimes improve asthma.

Not sure why she 'needs' a fit bit tho

YANBU and I'd be worried about a teacher that couldn't remember which kids had asthma.
