AIBU?

To want to walk out

I'm currently serving my notice period and have been the model employee. I've been preparing handover notes and making sure that my work is in the best place it can be for my successor.

Some of my colleagues are lovely and inclusive and friendly, but there are a few colleagues that are part of the reason i'm leaving. They are making life pretty unpleasant and as they are senior management (as am I) there is no one to turn to.

I need to stay as throwing in the towel now will severely affect my pay packet. I'd love to walk out and tell them all to shove it. Any experience of walking out and AIBU - is it normal to be treated like a second class citizen just because they don't need to invest time in you anymore?

I got treated in a pretty average way in a couple of jobs - in each case I wasn't sorry to be leaving the people concerned behind. It's not easy, but I stayed for the money. Also somehow my desire to tell them where to stick it and what I really thought of the place subsided as I knew I was moving on and it didn't matter any more.

One former manager got very angry when I refused to participate in an exit review - I wasn't impolite but simply refused - if they cared about how I felt they could have asked then - not after I handed in my notice.

It is not normal and they are arseholes. But don't just walk out because:
a) it will potentially make life harder for the lovely colleagues
b) it can't harm you to leave with a reputation of being professional right to the wire. You never know when you might come across some of these colleagues later on in your career and it will be a good thing if they remember you in a good light.

Not your circus, not your monkeys - you're just there for the money and soon this yuck will have passed.

Don't walk out. Just keep reminding yourself it's only a little while longer before you are rid of them and moving onto something better.
Don't do anything to jeopardize your hard earned pay, just for the sake of a few idiots - they aren't worth it. Hang in there.

Thanks for all of your kind comments. I'm still hanging in here! Not long left now.

I try and see it as "getting my own back by extracting the maximum amount of pay out of them before I go" :D

I agree you should hang in there, especially if it's not for long. Don't bend over backwards for them though.

Stick with it. The money will make it worthwhile, and by being there you'll be annoying the fuck out of the nasties. Smile at them and know you are leaving. :)

Stick it out.
You walking out and making a statement wont ever stop them from being cunts.
it'll all be ok - keep your head held high and leave on a good note.

A bit of a role reversal, but i used to wrk with a woman who made loud PA comments to the world at large herself. She handed in her notice, and i suddenly discovered that they didnt bother me any more, in fact i used to either completely ignore them (she was talkoing to herself, after all Wink) or willfully misunderstand the PA bit and take them at face value. It was liberating!

Can you just smile sweetly and really piss them off by being unfaultingly professional?

Don't walk out. I did from a job many years ago, and never worked in the same profession again. Thankfully I did not have a family then, as it was a painful period until I found a new job.
