I was going to post this on the Feminism boards but I have heard this from females too so thought I would post here to see views from those who do think this and agree with it.

I'm on a social media site and this comes up quite often. Yes, quite presumably from young males but I have also read about the 'Red Pill' and the 'MGTOW' movements which are mostly populated by the older males.

Aibu to think that Feminism in the first world is still needed and as relevant as ever? And amongst our 'luxuries' we are still the oppressed class?

In my career, the pay gap between males and females is 10%. Not saying that this is the most important type of oppression but it's enough to illustrate that feminism is still required.

I was in burger king recently and there were 2 toilets. One open male and a locked disabled / women's. The Barbican has recently changed its toilets from male / female to male / gender neutral.

So i can't even go for a pee / clean up unexpectedly flooding with period blood in a woman only space.

Girls are skipping school because they can't afford sanpro in the nearest city to me.

A woman recently was turned away from an office job because she wasn't wearing heels.

I do have to take my hat off to the MRAs they have done one hell of a number on women especially if they are believing this shit.

Think people are just starting to get a bit bored of feminists whinging about high heels at work and the non existent pay gap. While women outside of first world countries have it a million times worse.

I probably thought there was no need for feminism in the "first world" (I didn't really think about it) til I had children.

That was the eye opening thing for me, so I understand how those who haven't seen it can have selective blindness.

We do need feminism..
Arguably its more relevant than ever.
In some cases, I'd say we have plenty of rights, but whats the point of that if you're prevented from exercising them due to
stigma
outright discrimination
the attitudes of others??
My younger sister who is nearly 18 reported a man to the police for sexual assault. He had cat called her from his van, then when she sat at the bus stop got out and tried to pick her up, force his hands down her pants and kiss her despite her protesting and trying to kick him off. According to some members(male and female) of our family it was ''just a bit of fun that got a little too rowdy'' and the guy doesn't need punishing.
My sister had the right to report him, but she doesn't have the right to not be berated for that.

If something isn't needed, it will become obsolete. The fact that some people are so hostile to the very concept of equality suggests to me that feminism is very much needed.

There is no access to abortion in some 'first world' countries, eg Ireland, Isle of Man.

Many men have been allowed to father and abandon children with little consequence while women have been left quite literally holding the baby.

Caring for children and elderly/infirm relatives and housework is still seen as 'women's work' by many. Likewise for all the myriad of 'organising' remembering birthdays etc.

Low level sexism is still rife and anyone who challenges it is told to 'lighten up'. Recent threads on here illustrating sexist behaviour by women included how women must wear something new at each formal occasion they attend while it is fine for a man to always wear the same suit or how the woman should be responsible for remembering her DHs relatives birthdays and shopping for cards and presents 'because women are better at it and enjoy it more'

We may not have to worry about being raped and then charged with adultery because we go out in public without a male relative but I don't think that translates into Feminism's Work Is Done and just because in theory, the law requires women to not be discriminated against, doesn't mean that is the reality at all.

I think there is still a lot of discrimination against females. Less than there used to be (good) but it's taken centuries to get this far and will take centuries more. Accepting that there has been good progress is no reason to stop.
I don't think men always have a good deal though deal though either. Look at the statistics of the young men killing themselves every year.
I have a son and a daughter and wish for equality for them both.

I've met a man who said that he saw the need for feminism in countries such as Afghanistan, but not here.

He turned out to be one of the most sexist twats I have ever had the misfortune of talking to.

So there is that.

Such men are quite happy that men in other countries are worse than them, so that their own shittyness is not quite so obvious. They have, obviously, no interest at all in those countries actually changing.

It's often the very last steps that are the hardest. Because it's so much more difficult to justify any action and rally people.

But, sexist attitudes still exist, domestic violence still exists, sexual harassment still exists.

Whatever has been gained by women in some countries can quickly be lost again.

We need feminism more than ever:

• rape culture.
  
• rights to abortion being attacked.
  
• there is still a pay gap.
  
• there are still low numbers of female MPs in comparison to males. Less women on boards, etc.
  
• the rise of eating disorders.
  
• and other issues, like the pink explosion in 'girls' toys. Girly glue, etc.
  
• Ensuring that maternity rights are protected post-Brexit.

Many of the problems faced by women in this country are dwarfed when compared with women in developing nations. That doesn't mean women in this problem don't face problems. They fucking do, and we very much still need feminism.
