AIBU?

To think it's not half term?

For a few years I've noticed that a lot of people refer to any school holiday as half term (except the summer holiday which is pretty much always called the summer holiday).

Now, when I was at school (ok it was a while ago), half terms were the week you would get off half way through the term, e.g. in October, February and May. The longer holidays were the Christmas and Easter holidays, NOT half term.

But now they all seem to he know as 'half term'. I've noticed it a lot on here as well as real life. I am probably massively unreasonable to get annoyed by it but every time I hear it it makes me twitch. How can it be half term at the end of a term?

Agree! Hate when people refer to it as half
Term! It's the Easter hols!

Loads of people I know do this too. Gets on my nerves. I assume they are too thick to realise that half term means half way through the term. Hence the name half term.

Not hard is it.

Oh god thought this was just me! I get irrationally wound up at this.

No it's the Easter holidays. We had half term in February.

I haven't heard anyone saying it's half term. Confused

It's Easter. Ergo it's the Easter hols. So why would anyone say it's half term?

I'm a teacher and I refer to each and every holiday as half term Blush. Never thought about it before but could see why it could be confusing!

Oh thank God I'm not the only one! It's weird how it's changed over time. I've even heard teachers in school calling it half term!

I would call it end of term, end of Spring term or Easter holidays.

Half term is wrong. I just think that lots of people don't realise what it actually means.

Doesn't bother me what other people call it though.

I wondered if it was some kind of PC thing that holidays can't be referred to by religious festivals anymore or something.

I've also noticed this and also find it annoying so it's certainly not just you!!!

It's not a PC thing in my case, I work for a deeply religious school. I think it's just a habit.

Drives me mad too! It's not half term because it's not half way through a term, it's the easter holidays!!

Did we see the same Facebook post last night? I thought exactly the same thing!

Half term is the break you get half way through the term.

I fully accept that I'm a pedant though

That's so bizarre. I've heard a couple of people calling it half term, but I just assumed they were confused. Now you're telling me it's a thing! I'll start correcting people immediately.

It annoys me too. Half term is in the middle of the term. There's also Easter holidays and Christmas holidays.

(Here they're still at school anyway).

Shouldn't it be called the Cadbury Egg Hunt Holiday 😃😃😃?

It annoys me too, and then don't get me started on now having six terms in a school year so calling anything half term makes even less sense.

Rhoda - I'm having a break from fb at the moment so not inspired by anything on there.

I've just noticed that recently too. Led to a very confusing conversation in one instance.
