AIBU?

To get annoyed if the person in front at the till......

.....doesn't put the little divider thing after their shopping?

Obviously if someone has loads of kids or is otherwise distracted then fair enough, but for those who have time and are just standing there I find it infuriatingly rude that they don't do this.

AIBU?

I just leave a gap.

Bet the checkout people see so much shopping they can probably work out who's is who's.

Checkout/shopping psychology could be an interesting thing to hear about.

As someone who works on a till

It's not always obvious we aren't mind readers

Please use the divider

As you were

I usually put one at the start and the finish of my shopping.

#YANBU. Annoys the crap out of me. Especially when people stand IN THE WAY OF THE DIVIDERS so you can't even reach them yourself.
Although I've discovered a 100% solution: say "excuse me, would you mind passing me a divider please?" Very direct, polite and effective. Not very British though.
Also annoys me that the more expensive the shop the slower the till service is.

I used to work at Waitrose on the checkouts whilst I was at school and it really isn't clear who the items belong to if people don't use the little barrier!

Nobody's blaming the people working on the tills, are they?

It bugs me too. I either ask them to pass it or just put my stuff on and they soon put it there themselves!

Annoys me too but I get it as soon as I can reach and pop one in front and behind.

I use the dividers!

But it's so obvs.... EVERYONE puts the heaviest items first cos you're not going to put them on top of the eggs or the fruit etc

and puts the easily damaged/want to eat now stuff on last.

Yanbu.... although - even more annoying that this is tills with massive long belts and only one divider available. I don't know about anyone else but I almost feel the need to apologise to the next person for the lack of divider and then hover and swoop to put it in place as soon as it's available.

I just say to them: 'Excuse me, could you please pass the divider thingy?'

Then they do.

The ones that really annoy me are the ones that stand their staring into space, and when they checkout operator gives them the total, they look at them as if you to say 'oh, you expect me to pay for these?' then go looking for their purse, then they have to find their rewards card, then find their bank card. Have it ready people! It's no great surprise that you're going to be expected to pay.

It can be cultural. In Scandinavia it's sometimes the next person who puts the divider up.

What annoys me the most is when the next knobber person, puts the diver down and starts putting their own shopping on, when you've not even finished putting your shopping on it! 🛒 😡

I like to put the divider down when it's possible to,but quite often it is out of my reach. I have limited movement in my arms due to RSI/arthritis/tendinitis in my shoulders, and if the cashier doesn't push the divider far enough down,I just can't reach it. I have had customers in front of me getting irritated and slamming the divider down when I haven't been able to. So please bear in mind that some of us aren't not doing it to be annoying or because we can't be bothered!

OP,
It bloody winds me up let me tell you .😡,so I just load my shopping on and they soon put the divider between us as they don't want to be charged for a box of tampax and 3 pairs of ladies black hold ups whilst buying their lunchtime meal deal at Waitrose.
When I say "they",I mean male . Haha

So just leave a small gap. By the time your stuff has reached the till, you will be able to reach a divider and put it into the gap, as they will have moved up to start packing their shopping. I don't see what the problem is.

The one who ought to be burnt at the stake in the car park is the one who suddenly remembers another item half way through the scanning - and goes back for it while the queue waits. Pay for what you've gpt and then go back and wait again, you selfish twat. You're the one who forgot it, waste your time not ours!

It annoys me as well,I find it quite rude, but the worst people are the one's that then either ignore you saying excuse me please(so you can reach the sodding divider) or stand there and tut to themselves.

I feel like saying what would you like me to do Fucking Magic the sodding thing into place! Angry

As you can tell by my post I love shopping! Grin

I always put the divider down for the next person. Why wouldn't you?! Don't be mixing your shopping up with mine. Smile
Plus, it means anyone with a basket behind you can comfortably start putting their stuff on the belt without feeling awkward.

Forgot to add I did see a post on here aaaages ago about the Mumsnet way to put a divider down. It was lengthways like this - presumably in the hope that MN'ers would unite and give each other knowing looks if they got one in their queue.
Everybody going "yeah! I'll do it!" and so I tried. Got a tut and it moved the "right" way so blatantly not a MN'er, lol [grn]

Some people get the hump if you put the divider on once they've finished putting their things on.

I have sometimes, waited till their stuff has moved along a bit then added the divider only to have them look at me like I've shat on the belt.

I still do it though. They don't get personal use of the bloody belt till' they've paid!

I'm sure it used to be the other way round, you put the divider on before your shopping and the next person put one on before theirs? Then I moved to France where people there put the divider after their load. I got into that habit, moved back to the north of England and had to switch back, then when I moved south a few years later they did it the opposite way again!

It's like which side to step to to pass a person walking towards you - can't we make a decision and stick to it?

Cheese,
I remember that thread! I still do it occasionally, it's funny watching the reactions. I tend to do it at a slight angle rather than lengthways but people always 'correct' it.
