Dress up, watch the ceremony, drink and dance and chat. Maybe even have your photo taken?
It seems fashionable now to call them stuffy and hate them.

I like them too. Even the speeches, the wedding cake and watching the first dance (as long as they don't try to do a choreographed dance). But I am not under 30 so maybe I am just old fashioned

Oh yes the speeches are usually entertaining. :)
And as a vegetarian I get on so much better with traditional wedding dinners than hog roast or fish and chips - there are so many people with dietary requirements these days I genuinely don't understand why these 'one size fits all' meals are so popular

My DP and I are having what you describe as a proper wedding in August...can't wait for the whole lovely day.

Photographer, sit down meal, disco and hog roast! Grin

You are forgiven if you have a proper wedding cake though

No. It's boring when everything is so predictable, and you've been to many many many replications over the years.

But then, I guess that if everyone had an "original" wedding, they'd pretty soon become the norm too. Meh.

But soaps are boring and repetitive and people watch them religiously twenty times a week. At best i went to two or three weddings a year

Woe! Gorgeous and very traditional :)
I'm not keen on fruit cake. But not really liking it is part of the tradition for me :o

i loathe all kinds of weddings and rarely go. I expect two failed marriages have soured it for me.

Ah ok. Hog roast allowed then.
I amseriously thinking about signing up to some sort if website for rent a friend. Everyone hates these weddings yet there are loads of them - I bet there's a market for enthusiastic guests

I love a proper Wedding, complete with hats/fascinators.

I don't go out much now and enjoy having a reason for an Updo and formal dress/makeup.

""i loathe all kinds of weddings and rarely go. I expect two failed marriages have soured it for me.""

Just disassociate Weddings from Marriage.

FoofFighter I feel like "original" weddings are the norm now and fully traditional ones are more unusual (depending on your definition of traditional). There are definitely trends, mostly the sort of stuff you see on Pinterest. Photo booths for example used to be quirky but now very common.

Most people do try to add some "unique" elements to their wedding these days e.g. cream van, trees/bowls/photo booths/artwork etc instead of traditional guest books. A lot of people don't do the traditional first dance anymore and it's often a case of everyone joining in after the first chorus or first 30 seconds! A lot of people have their own music to walk down the aisle instead of traditional wedding march, and people dont get married in churches as much... The list goes on. Even seemingly conventional weddings are not as traditional as they used to be.

Im 27 and I haven't attended a properly traditional wedding since I was about 12! All the weddings I've been to as an adult have been fairly unique/quirky/modern.

Mmm not sure about that Birds, still the free food and booze is ok Grin

Well given that so many people have them....I dunno.

To me a traditional wedding like that is several hours long and that's the problem. and unless you are practically their best mate, the speeches are dull as ditchwater. I'm also veggie but haven't ever been invited to a non traditional one. Well, I've been to two that weren't stuffy and posh but they had good choice of food.

I find 'formal' weddings, why are they more 'proper' than any other wedding?, a total drag and beyond boring.

Good point about use of the word 'proper'.
Goldfish, what would you prefer to do with your several hours,? I enjoy socialising.
