Having food/drink policed whilst pregnant

About three weeks ago, buying a full English takeout for OH...
Cook: "How do you want your eggs?"
Me: "Runny please."
Cook: "Ooooh... you know you shouldn't have runny eggs whilst pregnant. I'll fry it till it's hard." vanishes back into kitchen before I can stop her

Last week, in a pub garden with me, SIL, and OH...
Waiting staff: "What drinks do you want?"
Me: "Two white wines and a coke please."
waiting person returns with drinks
Waiting staff, trying to figure out who to give the drinks to, obviously concludes the wines are for me and SIL: "Ummm... did you want something else? I mean because... you know..."
Me: slightly confused stare since I hadn't twigged yet
Waiting staff: "Is the wine for you?"
Me: "No. It's for MIL else who's arriving imminently. I have a bottle of water in my bag."
Waiting staff: "Oh phew! For a minute there I thought you were going to drink whilst pregnant!" chuckles her way back inside

Today, in Spar, buying my lunch, along with three high-protein peanut bar snack things which actually, for once, are for me, and I've checked with the obstetrician that it's okay for me to eat these since I'm otherwise low on protein in my diet...
Checkout woman, looking at me, very deliberately at my bump, and then at the nutritional content on the bars, literally reading the guidance on there: "Are you allowed to eat these?? I don't think these are okay during pregnancy."
Me in a pretty flat, unimpressed voice: "Are you an obstetrician?"
Checkout woman: "... A what?"
Me: "A specialist in fetal development."
Checkout woman: "... Er... no...?"
awkward silence whilst she scans, I pay, and leave

Sat here, now, chomping on a maple and peanut bar, I feel like a bit of an arsehole in retrospect. So... WIBU to get a bit shirty with the checkout woman?

Ugh, the stuff in bold was meant to be literally in asterisks. That'll teach me not to preview.

Yanbu. It's like you become public property.

It is your body, what you put in to it, pregnant or not, is your choice. Nobody else has the right to comment, even if the wine, eggs, or anything else, is for you.
They can have an opinion, but they have no call to air it or make decisions for you.

I quite like it as it is, it looks like stage directions.
Is baby your first? Because unfortunately from minute of conception onwards you get Shedlads of unwanted advice which you largely have to ignore whilst writing cunt on the roof of your mouth with your tongue...

This drives me spare. You aren't an infant. You don't need people giving unsolicited dietary advice.

"I'll eat and drink what I want, thanks."

Just say that!

Why in heck would protein be bad during pregnancy?! Your response to her was perfect!

I got told I was disgusting for being out in town at midnight when I was pregnant. Never mind the fact I was only walking up a street having picked up my husband and extorted McDonald's out of him for the lift I just retorted that I wasn't aware of there being a pregnancy curfew! It's hard to argue with stupid AND drunk people!

Absolutely not. People should just mind their own business. I work in the customer services food industry for years and wouldn't have dreamed of passing comment on what a pregnant lady ordered or how she ordered it.

YANBU.
especially when they're not even telling the truth. You CAN have runny eggs,
If lion stamped, I think.
In any case It's your choice to take the risk or not. No one else's business!!

On holiday in Greece a year or so ago a waiter was very concerned when I ordered a G&T, he didn't speak much English but he pointed at my belly and made bump gestures.

I wasn't pregnant.

Oh it's so annoying!

I had a barista in Starbucks refuse to give me the latte I'd just ordered as it had caffinene in it! As if I need my drinks monitored by a teenager who then claimed she 'wasn't allowed' to serve pregnant women caffinated beverages! Grrrr. She started to claim it was even against the law then backtracked to against company policy when I started to laugh at her.

Ffs. Irony is id actually been sent to get a sugary drink for me as the baby wasn't moving, and the midwife actually said 'and a bit of caffeine won't hurt either'... an hour and half a latte later the baby was very much awake and moving like anything 😝

That was the only caffeine I had in the whole pregnancy, but surely it is my decision to make?

Seriously- someone in Spar checked the nutritional info on a snack?!

Report

This kind of thing didn't happen to me once in pregnancy. I had the odd glass of wine in a pub too. Unbelievable really.

To the op, omg yes! They've even changed the advice given now regarding runny eggs, sushi etc and yet people still are sticking their oar in. I've been questioned on the following (by friends, family, waiting staff complete strangers)

Starbucks coffee (came as decaf when I had not had any caffeine that day specifically for this treat)

Mayonnaise from a jar

McFlurry and a 99 ice cream

Gelato

Beef at an all you can eat Brazilian style restaurant. The waiters just wouldn't let me have any!

Out for a roast and my roast beef cake out pretty much incinerated

Sushi from a supermarket

Cooked prawns

A small tuna sandwich

😡😡😡😡😡

Oh and I've had numerous people question the legality of me stepping near a pub.

Oh no... I'm pregnant now & haven't got a clue about "what not to eat".
I eat fairly well anyway, not much meat, lots of veg. And I know about booze (though I did get hammered, and I never drink much, at a party right before my BFP) & blue cheese etc...
I don't want to have to worry about every bite! Nevermind other folk watching my diet... Am in for 9 months of bump-watch / cat's bum? I was at another party last night & I'm sure my water consumption was being noted by every female in the place! Although I do often order fizzy water, so... Hopefully nobody's on to me!

Though on the flip side I've got out of eating some vile things by claiming "I probably can't have it" 😂👌🏼

I had it all the time, it was so annoying as I could hardly keep anything down so I had to eat the same weird combinations all the time!

My friend was sweet though and on hearing I could only really keep down Coca Cola went and got me loads of ubuntu cola (fair trade and I think organic) hoping it would be a teensy bit healthier. Unfortunately it didn't work so I limited myself to one can of coke a day and teensy sips of plain hot water.

I had a glass of sangria on holiday whilst pregnant. It was my birthday do I decided to treat myself. One glass. The waiter brought it over, looked at my bump and said "for you?" To which I nodded and he pointed at my bump and said "really? It has wine in it?". I felt like the worst person in the world because he was so obviously judging me as a terrible mother but it was one bloody glass of watered down wine!!! Didn't drink it in the end, I went home in tears instead. Happy bloody birthday to me!

This has never happened to me through my two pregnancies. Seems I've been very lucky.

What's with the caffeine thing? I can cut down to one cup of tea a day if I have to... Never heard of this before!

Report
Tartyflette · 02/04/2017 11:34

Good god! Starbucks won't sell coffee to pregnant women??? Is that in the UK?
Another reason to boycott the smug, tax-avoiding tossers.
