AIBU?

Gas bill - £1250 for 2.5 months

So we're in our new house - yes, it's very big, no, this isn't a boasting post.

Hubby says it's the heating - it's not that hot in here, I still wear a jumper and the underfloor heating is very low. I say it's the fact that hubby has a boiling hot bath filled to the top every night for 1.5 hours which he tops up. He claims a bath only costs about £1 a night and that isn't the problem.

Hubby thinks the amount charged is reasonable.....and is off for his bath.

Aibu to be blaming the baths?

Yes, it will be the heating.

That is an awful lot of money, could you possibly have a gas leak? Or faulty meter?

Depends on your boiler and whether your have a hot water cylinder and whether your water heater is on all the time. One bath won't use all that has. Is your heating on a timer/thermostat too?

I live in a big house in a very very cold bit of American and have big boiling hot baths every night and my gas bill is nowhere near that high even in winter.

Thats what I pay in a year!

Can you speak to the previous people to see what they paid?

Underfloor heating in a big house will cost a fortune! As long as you gave accurate reads when you moved in and accurate reads have been used for the bill then you have used it somewhere.

Just going to say something shocking: it could be a combination of the heating and the hot baths.

I know I know, I'm crazy and a maverick, but it's a possibility...

It would be The heating

Have you checked that the before and after readings are correct?

That's 2 years worth of usage for us. Old large Edwardian semi.

Yikes

You've got a leak, that's outrageous and I live in a big house (3 floors) - only pay 900 all year!

MaximaDeWit · 31/03/2017 19:37

That is a huge amount. Is it just the two of you in the house? To be fair to your husband, I am a fan of a long, hot bath but the fuller it is the less I have to top up as it holds it heat for longer so I'd be inclined to say it's the heating. How energy efficient is the house?

I would be getting the gas company to review - they must be able to compare your usage with previous years?

Hope you read the meter the day you moved in.

Seems excessively high.

ok that's monstrous. Do you have the heating on in the entire house all the time or are there unused areas that you can leave until you need them?
ours is 3.5k square feet but parts aren't heated all the time (spare room etc). It's fully underfloor, wet gas system. Our winter bill is WAY lower than that. OH - when we first moved in we had a shocker because the hot water was on constant - do you have instant hot water when you turn on a tap or does it take a while to get there? I forget how it's solved (and in the robbing peter to pay paul equation, if you're on a water meter, you'll use more water) but that made a huge di££erence

Btw that's about 10 months worth of heating for us and I like to slowly poach in my baths.

Also have heating on regularly.

Sorry, sounds about right! My parents live in a large Victorian house with some underfloor hearing and their gas bill is about £2.5k for the winter quarter, obv not nearly that in the summer.

Unless you are running a large cannabis farm I would take this up with customer service. Did you just move in? If so the previous owners usage would be a guide.

Check the meter before and after the bath. But also its a crazy amount.

There's no way that's can be right. I like my house warm and we pay £60 per month for gas and electric. Even if we had it in full time I can't imagine it would be anywhere near that amount.

Buttercupsandaisies · 31/03/2017 19:49

Id say that's normal, I live in a 3 bed Victorian semi and my last quarter was 1k (Jan to March). I'm with EON

Those paying much less, are you sure you're not in debit? When we first moved in we paid £90 per month for the first year- suddenly got a gas bill on my annual review showing I was £1500 debit on my gas bill! I'd had no idea as they'd set the monthly payment! I now pay much more but always balances over the year
