To be confused over HPV

I had a smear test the other week and have now had a letter saying borderline abnormal cells. They have done a further test and I have HPV. I'm confused I have been with the same partner for 15 years and neither of us have cheated. Before that I was with someone for 2 years. I have a four year old dd. So my question is how did I get it and how long have I had it. Do I need to be worried about dd? I've read it is quite normal but was just hoping for some reassurance really!

I had HPV as a teenager (genitsl warts) and although it hasn't come back it is a virus that stays with you. My first smear (7 years later) came back with SIN3 cells and I am sure it was linked.

Oh and my kids weren't affected at all. DH has never caught it. Not all strains present as warts.
I had my SIN3 (stage before cancer) cells burned off and all clear since. It's not a big deal, I have at least 3 friends who also had this done.

You could have caught it years before, or even off your partner when you first got together. Or your partner (and you) are asymptomatic and have the virus but no outward signs or warts.

HPV can lie dormant for years. You wouldn't be able to pinpoint when you caught it.

HPV is something that can lie dormant for many many years, you or your partner probably had it before you even got together.

It's very common and it's nothing to worry about. It doesn't get passed to your child through birth.
I had my smear a few months ago and received the same letter. I had my colposcopy last month and it was all clear, they put me back into 3-yearly smears.

Thanks everyone. It was a bit of a shock getting a letter like that! Is the colposcopy ok?
