To be annoyed at mandatory 5p carrier bag charge when there's no carrier bAg?

I know it's only 5p and I need to put here but I am slightly annoyed by the principle of it.

Ordering pizza from a well known national chain via their app, a mandatory 5p charge for a carrier bag was put on. I pick the pizzas up in store, no carrier bag. I jokingly say "where's my carrier bag". They say they don't have carrier bags.

I'm now puzzling over whether they'd just run out or never have them. But even if they did have them in, who on earth wants 4 big boxed pizzas in a carrier bag? I'm hardly going to carry them home vertically in a bag as they'd all slide into a mush.

If this store do t his to everyone they're making a fortune nationwide.

Weird that they would put the charge on when you didn't get a bag.

Last time I ordered pizza from a well know national chain, I ordered a deal which included a bottle of pop, and the pop came in a branded carrier bag. They didn't charge me for the bag. Maybe I should send you 5p to even out the universe Grin

KoalaDownUnder · 27/03/2017 16:19

Yes, that is rather ridiculous! I'd call them on it.

PossumInAPearTree · 27/03/2017 16:20

Well I've just done an oñline order with Tesco where you pay 40p per order for carrier bags. If I get more than 8 (which I usually do) I guess I'm winning.

They were big pizzas, like 14" across. I don't think they would fit in a carrier bag.

Some pizza places have bags where the corners are cut out so enables you to carry stacked up pizza boxes flat...but shouldnt be charged if you don't actually get one Hmm

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 27/03/2017 16:40

Hmm, that's daft, charging you for a bag and not giving you one! That would irrationally bug me and I'd probably opt to order my pizza elsewhere, in protest.

We order from dominos and always get a drink in a bag that I've not paid for. I don't need the bag so wouldn't pay if I had a choice, I'd just remove the bottle and return the bag. The bags not paid for, the drink is part of the deal.

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 27/03/2017 16:40

It's fraud if they are charging an not giving you one. On every transaction those 5ps add up.

Sillymummy81 · 27/03/2017 16:42

It annoys me in supermarkets when they make you say how many bags you want before you've packed! How about I pack, use however many bags I need, then you ring through the charge for the bags at the end instead of making me guess!! Angry

MongerTruffle · 27/03/2017 16:57

Pizza Express?

If you order online there's a cross next to the carrier bag charge.

TheProblemOfSusan · 27/03/2017 16:59

Yeah that's really really annoying. YANBU. If I could be arsed I'd complain about it, would depend on my mood at the time!

BTW, Ocado charge you as they ought to, but also give you 5p back for every bag you return, and they can be any old carrier bag, don't have to be Ocado ones. So if you go to e.g. the corner shop where they don't need to charge you, you can sell them back to Ocado. Best I ever managed in one return was £1.80 back.

Dulcibella · 27/03/2017 17:01

My online Asda shop keeps arriving bagless even though I've requested and paid for bags.
It's annoying me that much that I think I'll have to start shopping elsewhere

Janey50 · 27/03/2017 17:11

How daft! Who puts boxes of pizza in a carrier bag? And what a cheek to charge you for a non existent bag. Something that annoys me is when I buy stuff from a certain well-known bakers shop. They always ask 'Would you like a carrier bag?' and never mention that it costs 5 pence. OK I know that people should know by now that there is nearly always a 5 pence charge for a carrier bag,but the number of times I have seen customers handing over the exact money for their purchases then being told it's 5 pence short! And the carrier bags are pathetically small.

PossumInAPearTree · 27/03/2017 17:12

Yes, pizza express. Could I have uncrossed the box then?

Must admit I was multitasking, ordering pizza whole shopping in Ikea hell.

But it ought to be opt in, not opt out. Tesco don't put a charge for 10x carrier bags on every transaction and expect me to uncheck it.

Small carrier bags give me the rage Janey

H&M gave me a 6" high carrier bag on Saturday for the eye mask I was buying. I asked them to swap it for a full size one which they did! I was going shopping elsewhere afterwards and didn't want to have to buy a bag in River Island if I could fit my stuff in the first bag!

All the money from sales of carrier bags is meant to go to charity.

WicksEnd · 27/03/2017 17:33

It should go to charity but it doesn't always. Even Sainsbury's got in trouble for it so I imagine it's rife amongst other retailers too.

WankersHacksandThieves · 27/03/2017 17:37

I just can't see the point of getting het up about 5p that is supposed to go to good causes. It might be more productive to contact the firm and ask them for information on where the money goes?

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 27/03/2017 17:37

Four fourteen inch pizzas? Blimey. I'm missing the point aren't I?

I feel put out when I need a bag and they say "We only have the small ones today" and they're 5p too! Fuck off.

c0lette · 27/03/2017 17:43

Sounds like a scam to me...

I just don't get the moaning to be honest. Either take your own bag or suck it up, the money isn't going in the retailers pocket but if you think they are scamming then report them.

I would call them out on it on Twitter and Facebook... Would be interesting to see their response.

This thread has just reminded me that I got charged 10p for a bag in Home Bargains the other day. I asked them for one of the 5p bags and the woman refused, said they only did 10p bags. When I asked politely that I thought it was the law that they had to have 5p bags to sell you, she called the manager over who said that the law had changed, they were all switching to 10p bags and they were just a small shop so had already used all their old 5p bags whereas the bigger stores like Sainsburys were still working through their stocks... and that soon we would all only be able to get 10p bags.

I thought at the time it was a pile of crock I was being fed but there were long queues and I was in a hurry so let it go with a comment about how strange it was that there seemed to be a news blackout on the story.

This has just reminded me to find out if there really is a change to the law or if they were deliberately being awkward and making up rubbish about updates to the legislation to make it sound like there was a good reason for not having bags and to get rid of a potentially awkward customer or if they had run out and couldn't face telling the truth or if they have decided to stop using the 5p bags and having to donate the money to charity when they can sell the 10p bags and keep all the money for themselves or ???

Anybody know if stores have to have 5p plastic bags for you?
