AIBU?

To ask for the scandalous secrets of your industry?

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 27/03/2017 13:44

Or just dirt?

Mine isn't very interesting, more just sad. My background is in immigration and I have never worked with so many racist (and stupid) people.

A boat of refugees when down and the guy who told us the news was laughing about it.

Endless racial stereotypes and visas refused because "as if a French person would go out with a Japanese person" etc.

Then there was the chap who said amnesty are evil because they provide money for abortions to rape victims in the Congo. He's the same guy who refuses to assess any applications from homosexuals because he thinks they should all be denied visas. He doesn't get fired for this.

There are probably more but they are the stand outs.

What's your industry gossip? I'd especially love to hear from nannies and cleaners but I'm interested in all dirt!

OP posts:
Sample1936 · 27/03/2017 13:47

What is the point?

Sample1936 · 27/03/2017 13:48

Free materials for your book/article?

Wishiwasmoiradingle2017 · 27/03/2017 13:48

Lots of dirt in my job.
I am a cleaner! Grin

HairsprayBabe · 27/03/2017 13:49

In my office people steal stationary! Shock

HateSummer · 27/03/2017 13:49

🤔...what you've described is illegal not gossip. You know people can easily trace you IP and find out where you work?

Lingotria · 27/03/2017 13:50

Those aren't scandalous secrets OP, those are blatant crimes if you're in the UK. Racial discrimination when assessing visa applications is illegal.

Bloomed · 27/03/2017 13:55

Have you thought about whistleblowing OP?

Losgunna · 27/03/2017 13:57

Wow that's pretty shocking.

I used to be a chef (sahm now) and all I will say is if I can't see the kitchen in a restaurant I'm am very reluctant to eat there. And never order fish on a Monday (it's Fridays catch at best)

All you can eat buffets are also food poisoning waiting to happen.

A great deal of chefs I know/ have known take some sort of drug, be it legal or otherwise (mostly alcohol, weed and cocaine. So much cocaine.) Not all though, there are enough perfectly sober and reliable people that it's not really a problem.

On a happier note you'd probably be very pleasantly surprised at how clean and hygienic fast food chains tend to be, and how quickly they get on it if something isn't up to scratch.

Iamyourmotheryours · 27/03/2017 13:59

Here's one that will be true for all industries: It's always about the money. Always.

Another generic one: People are idiots. Including us.

Boophis · 27/03/2017 14:00

Appalling to hear about how racist immigration officials are. That is shocking and disgraceful

Soubriquet · 27/03/2017 14:02

Used to work in retail

A lot more theft goes on than you think is possible

Stores are linked to each other. So if you are caught stealing we will warn other stores

AtleastitsnotMonday · 27/03/2017 14:05

Losgunna would you say any of the chain restaurants are better than others? Or ones to avoid?

Henrysmycat · 27/03/2017 14:08

I don't care if you write a book or article, though I would hate it if you work for the Daily Fail but anyhow...

I worked for years overseas in the oil and gas industry. Any old fudger who works in places like the'-stan's or previous Russian federation countries is cheating on his wife if he already hasn't divorced to marry some 22 leggy blonde that takes him for a ride to the nearest Passport office. It was so common that, many oil companies changed policies to help the middle aged wife back home raising the kids and finding herself with no income. It put me off the industry for sure. Certain countries were like giant beds with many teenagers or barely legal adults. Disgusting behavior when the old 60 year old hooks up with the 19 year old. People from these countries have no qualms or morals and go for anyone, married, young, old, fat, bald, ANYONE. African and some Asian countries are not as bad.

Birdsgottaf1y · 27/03/2017 14:09

When I worked in health care settings, it was a good job that, in particular, night staff (of all ranks) aren't drug tested.

I worked in two hospitals and across different settings.

Losgunna · 27/03/2017 14:14

I can't say for all of them but when I was starting out I worked in KFC, was spotless, you could do your makeup in the reflection in the fryers if you wanted to (not literally obviously but it was very clean). A friend worked in subway and while it didn't breach a year h&s laws it certainly pushed it a bit sometimes from what I've heard. Certainly nothing to worry about though and it wouldn't put me off eating there.

Not chains as such but if you can, try and get a look at the chefs whites. If they look minging, avoid, if they look clean you're more likely to be OK.

If anyone with long hair isn't wearing a net expect hair in the food at some point. Even if it is tied back.

If anyone handling food is also handling money that is really gross, money is filthy. They may as well be going to the toilet and not washing their hands then preparing food. Grim.

habibihabibi · 27/03/2017 14:15

this

  • psychiatric nurses stealing drugs take and to sell.
ThePiglet59 · 27/03/2017 14:15

This has to be a Mail reporter

LaContessaDiPlump · 27/03/2017 14:18

I assist with writing up clinical trials for publication; one of the rules for being an 'author' is that you have to provide comment on all drafts of an article. Unfortunately, 'I have no comment' counts as a comment and so we have a fair number of 'authors' who haven't contributed a word to the paper with their name on (which they get the credit for). Otherwise it is pretty tightly regulated though.

It's not dirt really but when I was nursing in the 90s, extra morphine would be given to those patients at the end of life who were in terrible pain.
They died more quickly but peacefully, family all were aware.
You couldn't do that now.

shovetheholly · 27/03/2017 14:21

I worked for the NHS for a while. Deputy director of a national service used to rank women in the office out of 10, and wouldn't eat crisps out of the same bowl as anyone gay in case it was catching. He was also a total racist (along with a couple of other people in the office, he'd use the n-word). He had a lackey who was in his 30s, basically a kind of mini-me who toadied up to him on a daily basis, agreeing with everything he said - even the ridiculous, aggressive, alpha-male stories of how he (aged 60) beat up 17 men in a bar fight. The heads of service underneath the deputy director were largely middle aged women who had been promoted way beyond their competence, and they resented anyone with new ideas. Grim, grim, grim.

user1487064897 · 27/03/2017 14:21

If you buy Nestlé's chocolate who's coco beans are predominately from the Ivory Coast chances are slaves picked the coco. They give it all the biggun about Rain Forest alliance and all that shit but they know this goes on and still continue to buy from coco from there.

Peonyfan · 27/03/2017 14:22

shovetheholly a lot of bullying in the NHS- do you agree?

Sodomeyes · 27/03/2017 14:24

In academia, most male professors have banged, or are trying to bang, their much younger female colleagues.

They very rarely try to shag undergraduate students but postgraduates, postdoc staff and early stage lecturers are always a target.

I think most senior (and some junior) men only go to conferences for the sex.

Itscurtainsforyou · 27/03/2017 14:24

Peonyfan- I remember that was done for my grandparents - and completely the right thing to do.

Can that no longer be done because of the opposition to assisted dying? If not, it's almost barbaric to leave people in pain...
