AIBU?

To cover up my very genuine mistake at work?

I feel awful about this but please don't berate me.

I collected money before Christmas for a charity collection (I didn't organise it.) I put it in my bag intending to put it in the office where it was meant to go. We finished early and I got chatting to people and I suppose I just completely forgot about it.

I changed bags after Christmas due to getting a present and I've just used the old bag again and found the money. It's just under £20. I have promptly donated online to the charity and have upped the donation as I really do feel awful.

But WIBU to keep quiet about it? My boss is a bit of a bully.

Of course not- the only time you should feel bad would be if you kept it! Nothing wrong with this at all, it was a genuine mistake which you sorted out (and added interest!)

TooSleepyToCare · 25/03/2017 22:13

I wouldn't mention it. You've donated it so there's nothing to be gained from sharing.

You need to calm the fuck down. You didn't rob an elderly woman of her worldly goods. You've done what can to reconcile the issue and you should think no more of it.

YANBU. You've given the money to the charity and you've upped it - it's fine! No need to tell your boss - nothing to be gained by telling them.

Thank you so much Blush I can't believe I did it and it's a good thing I noticed because otherwise I suppose I would technically have stolen it. Not that I'm excusing myself but I was given an insane number of things to do the week before we broke up. Just had a little cry Smile because you're all so nice!

I do Vlad I know but boss can be just awful and I would probably have been dismissed. She's done worse.

By the way pale I didn't say that in a patronising manner. I can just sense the amount of guilt and horror you feel through your posts. You've done more than others in your shoes would have done (essentially you've done the decent thing). I wonder if the issue is more about the horrendous boss you have? If so please feel free to elaborate on that but as it currently stands; you have done all and even more than you could to rectify this situation.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 25/03/2017 22:23

Did anyone notice it had not been donated/put in the right place? If not in this instance I wouldnt say anything and I always say to own up to things but I cant see what good it would do here.

palebluesky · 25/03/2017 22:24

I didn't read it patronisingly, don't worry! She's awful but she stops people moving on by writing awful and untrue references and I think I just feel sick and shaky at the thought that if she'd found out what I'd done, even though it was a very genuine error, she would probably have dismissed me for gross misconduct, meaning my qualifications would be useless.

You have done nothing wrong.

CoolCarrie · 25/03/2017 22:31

Let sleeping dogs lie with this. You have made good your mistake, so don't say a word.
