To think if you suffer from severe travel sickness, don't travel by coach?

I am on a national express coach. I'd rather not be, but it's the only way we can get to DPs DM without spending £80+

When we got to the coach (20 mins early) there was a queue in front of us. Annoying. Get to the coach, no banks of two left. Yes, our fault, should have got there earlier, I'll get over not sitting next to my fiancé for four hours Grin

Coach sets off, I open my inoffensive boots meal deal (sandwich and crisps for those asking). It's a 7.30 coach, I was at work until 6.30 (hence the lateness!)

Woman next to me asks me not to eat my sandwich. I point out that it's not hot, doesn't smell, isn't terribly offensive. She says it's due to her travel sickness. I then offer to let her swap with OH if she doesn't want to sit next me having dinner - but she says she needs to sit next the window so as to not get travel sick.

I completely understand there are a multitude of very good reasons why she might be nauseous. And maybe I'm being harsh because I'd like to sit next to DP. But really - if you are so affected by travel sickness that you can't sit away from the window, and can't deal with someone (at dinner time) eating a chicken salad sandwich, should you travel by coach?

I am fully aware there's a chance I'm BU, hence the offering to the vipers. If I get ratty I promise it's just the fact I can't eat any food until 11 on account of the lady sitting next to me. And being on a coach GrinWink

YANBU. Tell her your health requires you to eat at regualr times and not late at night. And get stuck in.

I think YABU to think that people with travel sickness shouldn't travel by coach - I get travel sick on buses, cars and sometimes trains. So I'm screwed however I travel.
That said YANBU to expect to be able to eat your inoffensive food in peace.

DP is also eating right now although actually great plan when he's done - can't believe I didn't think of that Grin

I'm just being grumpy as we snake through traffic thinking of all the things I could be doing rather than sitting next to a random who I'm now worried might spew on me at any moment.... Envy

Maybe she is also trying to get somewhere without "spending £80+", just like you? I do hope you get to eat though - I am horrible if I don't eat regularly as my DCs would be the first to say Grin

I have texted DP with morellos advice and expect to move and eat imminently Smile

There may be an element of 'hanger' involved...

YANBU.

I'd just worry she might show up on you if you eat the sandwich.
Do you have any Wine?

As an emetophobe this is my idea of a fucking nightmare.

Good luck op.

I do Chardonnay (v appropriate name!) but now I'm worried about opening it if she's so uncomfortable with the sandwich.

Just about to swap with DP. May refuse to swap back and drink my mini wine in peace Grin

Those of you who get travel sick, is there a reason why you wouldn't take tablets before travel? I have a friend who gets seasick, but doesn't seem to even consider it might be worth trying.

YANBU, she should've swapped with your OH while you ate your sandwich and then asked whoever was sitting with him if they'd mind swapping with her.

She may not be able to afford to travel any other way, but she shouldn't be preventing another passenger from eating at a meal time, that's selfish.

This.
If someone had even mentioned carsickness when sitting next to me I'd have moved seats immediately - or preferably got off the coach.

I don't take tablets because they're not compatible with my prescribed medication.

To be honest I'd probably ask to share the sandwich though.

Hope you enjoying your sandwich now OP.

I get motion sickness, as a child I found tablets made me feel worse (I have had a couple of brownies say the same thing).

I try and sit at the front or by the window but I've done 16 hour coach trips without a window seat and been fine as it's nearly all motorways anyway (plus it was night so couldn't see out the window anyway!)

I'm mostly ok now unless it's on really horrible windy roads on a minibus (almost threw up on the way to Guide camp last year, to the point I asked the other leader for a sick bag. Thankfully I didn't use it!)

I'm also a mostly recovered emetophobe so couldn't be doing with sitting next to someone who might spew! I was on holiday a few years ago on a coach trip and a small child kept being sick (ever so neatly into plastic bags held by his parents! I can't be sick neatly as an adult!) and it turned my stomach, I had to move away from them.

You can smell Boots sandwiches, but it's pretty inoffensive! And reasonable to expect people to be eating at that time on a long journey.

Food isn't banned, so she was BU and you would not BU to continue eating.

I get terribly travel sick, and would avoid coaches if I could. If I had to travel by coach though, I wouldn't for a second tell another passenger that they couldn't eat. For what it's worth travel sickness tablets make me feel awful, they stop me vomiting (sometimes) but make me feel awful.

Coach travel is cheap. I'm sure if First Class train travel was an option for her she'd have taken it.

Ultimately it's your right to eat and hers to like. I'd swap with your dh if I were you then don't swap back

The virgin pendolino tilting trains and those awful smelly chemical toilets that always broke down used to be awful for my travel sickness. Not travelled those lines for a while so no idea if things have improved!

I'll be honest, I would have said, '"orry, but this is my dinner and I'm eating it. You can swap seats if you're not happy about it. Welcome to public transportation.'

Keep your empty sandwich carton. Your companion might want to be sick in it later.

YANBU. I get horribly car sick and always try to avoid coaches and buses because of it. However, if it is a planned trip I will ensure I have eaten a lot and taken medication to help ease it. Ideally I'll also try to time it so I can sleep through the journey. Offensive smelling food is enough to make me be sick but not only was your food not smelly, the smell could come from several rows away and I accept that it would really unreasonable to expect that many people not to eat or drink for me.

My motion sickness is awful. I am sick whatever I'm on, so if I vetoe'd travel arrangements because they make me ill, I'd never go anywhere! I wouldn't ask someone not to eat, though - rude.
