This happened a while back and I wonder who was in the right.

Two young women both went to Rome to learn Italian for a year.
At the time of arrival they didn't know each other but met and became friends in Italian school.

At the time both lived in different accommodation but both in a UK-style halls situation and both wanted to move into their own separate studio/ apartment type of places.

Let's call girl 1 Kara, and let's call girl 2 Tabitha.

Tabitha finds a notice board which lists a studio apartment and calls the owner asking for a viewing. Owner responds positively and gives Tabitha a time and date to attend the viewing.

On the day of the viewing Tabitha is running late and when she arrives at the meeting place (not the actual apartment but a train station nearby) she finds the owner has left and owner is not responding to her calls, nor subsequent calls.

A few days later, Tabitha tells Kara what happened. Kara sympathises and asks for the notice with contact details. Tabitha hands it over as she thought it was a lost cause anyway. A week later Tabitha learns that Kara met with the owner and is planning on moving in to the apartment.

Tabitha felt very bitter but equally Kara felt that it was now fair game.

Should Kara have alerted Tabitha back when the owner got in touch with her - i.e. should Kara had accepted that Tabitha should have first refusal?

Kara invited Tabitha for dinner at the new apartment but by all accounts the relationship was stretched at that point.

I'd wonder why all the secrecy about who you are hmm

IslaMann Fri 24-Mar-17 15:18:51

Nope. You snooze you lose. If I were a landlord and a prospective tenant was late for an appointment I'd be concerned that they may not be reliable in other areas such as rent payments.

HarrietKettleWasHere Fri 24-Mar-17 15:20:43

Are you Kara

Tobuyornot99 Fri 24-Mar-17 15:21:15

What did Tabitha think Kara would do with the information, make oragami swans out of it? Tabitha missed out due to tardiness, lifeel lesson learnt.

Primaryteach87 Fri 24-Mar-17 15:21:52

Kara was sneaky.

If Tabitha gave the details to Kara - and Kara didnt specifically say - I'll try and contact them on your behalf
then of course Tabitha has no reason to be bitter. She lost the flat after being late.

My daughter is called Tabitha so she can clearly do no wrong grinwink

It was the Butler, in the Library, with the dagger

BorpBorpBorp Fri 24-Mar-17 15:38:13

Tabitha missed out on the apartment because she was late to the viewing. Kara couldn't have then viewed the apartment and offered it to Tabitha on the owner's behalf. No reason for Kara to miss out on the apartment just because Tabitha couldn't keep the appointment. It's a shame for the friendship to be lost over it, but not the end of the world.

Surely Tabitha knew that Kara was going to call, hence asking for the info? The owner obviously didn't want to rent to Tabitha hence not answering her calls, so what did Tabitha expect Kara to do? Not take it in protest that tardy Tabitha couldn't have the flat? Bait and switch and somehow con the landlord into letting to her?

expatinscotland Fri 24-Mar-17 15:42:58

I would think, 'Fuck it! It's just one apartment. There are others. And I'm in Italy, wahey!'

NinjaPosse Fri 24-Mar-17 15:46:02

I'm with IslaMann - Snooze you lose. If Tabitha was late then she wasn't very organised and I'm not surprised the owner rented it to Kara instead.

I'm guessing you are Tabitha!

I would just open a big bottle of chianti, order a plate of Spaghetti alle Vongole and cease to give a wild shite.

Saluti wine

I thought this was going to be about the Knox/Kercher case at the start.

LolaTheDarkdestroyer Fri 24-Mar-17 15:58:45

Tabitha was late, the owner obviously thought fuck her. Kara was a bit snide though.

VladmirsPoutine Fri 24-Mar-17 16:00:21

Saluti, chin chin! indeed! grin

armpitz Fri 24-Mar-17 16:00:28

Lolz

Miniwookie Fri 24-Mar-17 16:02:55

The owner probably wouldn't have let it to Tabitha anyway as she seemed unreliable. Silly to fall out over this.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar Fri 24-Mar-17 16:03:10

Tabitha was late, not Tara's fault.
Surely Tabitha knew that Tara was asking for the details in order to enquire about the apartment (what else was she going to do with them?!?)
If Tabitha was so bothered about it she should have a) turned up on time or b) contacted the owner, apologised and asked to rearrange

shaggedthruahedgebackwards Fri 24-Mar-17 16:05:04

Kara has done nothing wrong

Tabitha f**ked up by being late

Tabitha shouldn't have shared the contact details with Kara if she didn't want Kara to contact the owner

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar Fri 24-Mar-17 16:05:56

*Kara

AlmaMartyr Fri 24-Mar-17 16:28:46

Tabitha shouldn't have been late and shouldn't have passed on the contact details if she didn't want Kara to get the apartment. Kara hasn't done anything wrong.

sonjadog Fri 24-Mar-17 16:32:05

Kara didn´t do anything wrong. Tabitha should have kept phoning owner again if she wanted the apartment. She´ll be wiser next time around.

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway Fri 24-Mar-17 16:34:08

How late was Tabitha for her appointment
