You don't feed many kids peanuts.
You don't feed many kids gluten.
You don't feed other people's dogs cakes in the park.
Soo... WTF do people walk about trying to give my kid sweets constantly - other kids, parents, strangers even teachers!

Many kids have blood sugar, obesity, tooth enamel and issues with food colouring. Peanuts at least have nutritional value but WTF is the point of forcing sweets on children???

Apologies for ranting but am a bit fed up with it!!

Strangers give your kids sweets? Confused

Just don't let your kids eat them all? My kids still have Halloween sweets left.

Do they give the sweets directs to your child, or to you on their behalf? The latter is quite sweet. The former is a bit odd....

They're nice though aren't they? Grin

I worked with a woman who refused to give her dd anything sweet. The dd became deranged once she hit the teen years and spent any spare money she had on junk food and sweeties.

They can't live on broccoli and curly kale forever.

When you say "constantly", what are we talking here? Every day? Twice a day? Once a week?

I agree it's annoying (especially if you have a child who's type 1 diabetic or something) but a small amount of sugar won't do any harm. My children would never accept sweets from strangers, & if they're handed out at school (i.e. For a birthday or whatever) they wait till they get home then ask if they can have it.

Surely you are there so you just say no.

Being offered sweets isn't going to kill them like a peanut allergy. Or make them seriously ill if they coeliac. Tooth decay isn't caused by one packet of sweets. It's sweets not crack cocaine.

(Just as a quick addendum: That's not cause my two are particularly awesome or anything, ds in particular is a sugar junkie, but they don't eat food that's not from home without asking first)

Strangers give your children sweets?

Just say "no thank you" or "you can have them later"

Gluten?

Most people don't avoid gluten. It's only an issue for coeliac disease, not like everyone's doing gluten-free everything just in case.

Who gives gluten the same consideration as peanuts and sweets? Confused

Gluten??

How often are people giving your children sweets?

Who is giving your child sweets?

If it's strangers why don't you just say x isn't allowed those

Kids sharing sweets with other kids is normally surely how or why would you stop that unless your child has an allergy

Other parents again just say x isn't allowed those I find that works quite well

What sweets are they giving? Are we talking a king size twin or 1 haribo? Only the twin would bother me not the 1 haribo

Gluten?

Unless child is allergic will a few nuts really hurt?

Other parents well just say my little child isn't allowed so no thanks

If a child is sharing sweets again wouldn't really bother me unless it was a huge family size bag of something

In my time as a parent I can honesty say I have never seen a stranger walking around looking to give sweets to children 😂

It's worth keeping the sentiment in mind- these people mean well, they want to treat the kids maybe in the same way they remember sweets delighting them when they were younger.

I understand your frustration though! Maybe you could just not give them sweets at home, so if they are given them elsewhere it will be a treat rather than one of many that day or week. If you see what I mean?

How often are these strangers giving your child sweets? Everyday/week/month

Are they giving your child such huge amounts of sweets that it actually matters

Also "you don't feed many kids gluten"?! Wtf? Why would you not feed a child gluten, unless they are a coeliac?

The elderly lady next door puts mini bags of haribo through the letter box for Ds, I can't get worked up about it tbh. She's trying to do a nice thing, its sweet and he loves her and her dog so all in all it's lovely.

I just tell him he can't have them all at once, problem solved.

Feeling a bit left out though because other than in party bags no one gives my children sweets! Wish they would, so I could eat them Wink

Where do you live? I wish to move to this wondrous land of people handing out sweeties non-stop.

I do get the point that it is annoying to have the message about healthy eating and reducing sugar on one hand, when in reality people do tend to 'push' sweets onto children. I get that that is annoying and have experienced it. But it's your job as a parent to stop it being excessive, and if it's not excessive then it's not a problem.
