To put a password on the computer?

Dd is nearly 16, Year 11. A few years ago she bought a laptop with some money she had saved up. We helped her with the purchase and she got a decent one. All was fine for a year or two but then it started not working properly.

While we were trying to sort it out for her, she was using the family computer (mainly used by me as dh has a laptop).

We took the laptop to PC World and paid £60 for an overhaul. And also spoke to Asus who told me what to do to rectify the problem. It is now working fine.

However dd is still using the family computer. Every time I want to use it, she's on there. Either for homework or watching Youtube.

She says her laptop is working now but the latest thing is she can't find the power cable.

Got fed up with this so I put a password on the computer. Had a row this morning because she wanted to print out some homework and couldn't until I had put the password in. She said I made her late and I was being petty.

What do you think?

I would do the same as you. It will give her a bit of a nudge to look a bit harder for her power cable if nothing else!

So the family computer is in fact not a family computer, it's just for you.

purple it's mainly for me because dh has a laptop and dds 1 and 2 both have their own laptop. Dd3 uses the computer because she doesn't have her own. I don't mind any of them using it occasionally but dd1 seems to be on it so much because she can't be bothered to turn hers on or look for the power cable.

And sometimes I have stuff open on it which is private so I like to have a bit of control.

Put a password on it, and create an account with limited privileges for them to use. Not an admin or guest account.
Dont let them use your account at all.
