AIBU?

Girls trampolining and leotard glue AIBU to be shocked

So my friends 10 yr old DD has taken up trampolining. she's showing great promise and is competing already. However I was totally shocked when she told me that they aren't allowed to wear pants and therefore have to use leotard glue to keep it in place. They are also not allowed to wear bras. Boys who do the same routines wear tracksuit bottoms.

AIBU to think this is a sexist outmoded practice and actually a bit creepy?

I don't know about the pants part, but I'm
Guessing the bra part might be a safety thing regarding underwirings and piercing, like horse riding. Or perhaps fittings/straps/zips getting caught in the trampolining bed.

Not sure about bras but my DD does ballet and no pants allowed either. I guess it looks a bit crap in a leotard. Not sure about boys, not too many (none) in the ballet class.

No bras is fairly standard in gymnastics & ballet but leotards for older girls tend to have a bra shelf lining in.

We ignore any no knickers rule if they can't be seen its fine. Dd wears capezio dance pants or M & S seamless.

Sports bras don't need underwiribg etc you can get ones like tight and supportive crop tops.

Not allowed to wear a bra? No wonder I never excelled at trampolining!

She's at full time dance/ballet school by the wear & knickers are definately allowed.

Is this for training or competing?

YANBU? I think this every time I see gymnastics etc on TV. If there were any safety aspects then men would wear skimpy/tight outfits too

My honest thoughts is that the gymnastic/trampoline rules for girls leotards are disgusting Angry

They have to wear those high cut legs that go half way across their bum cheeks!!!

My DDs do Allstar Cheerleading - so tumbling and stunts - they were very skimpy stuff but they have skorts or shorts and long sleeve tops with bras - sport or otherwise underneath... some teams wear more traditional pleated skirts with shorts underneath. No bum cheeks are allowed to be shown!

Do male gymnasts/trampolinists have to wear a "belt" like male dancers do to stop them injuring their bits.

No pants common in gymnastics as can cause chaffing especially at seams. The no bra thing is more difficult with larger girls, but a good quality leotard will have support "built in"

It just seems archaic to me. Surely the competition should be about the children's ability only. Her DD feels very self conscious about having no pants on and I can understand why when she's trampolining.

Has she asked why she can't wear tracksuit bottoms like the boys? (if she'd actually prefer to)

I don't understand the comment about horse riding. A Good bra and comfy knickers are essential !

Good grief! You can't wear a bra if you are competing in trampolining? Good job that it's not something I want to do as I would have knocked myself unconscious by now!Grin

My dd's don't wear knickers under leotards. Their leotards fit them though so there is no bagginess and they aren't at the bra stage yet. I hadn't really thought about it before, perhaps because we lived somewhere hot where people were wearing far less clothes a lot of the time and kids in swimming costumes abounded.

Having even a flash of pants visible when trampolining is a massive no and you will either lose marks/be disqualified depending on on the club. This also includes the outline of pants showing through leotards.

Oldest's club allow trampoline shorts though and most of bigger girls wear dance pants under their leos.

As for the no bra thing, they ride up when you are bouncing, especially when you are using your arms to gain height. Sports bras have a nasty habit of rolling up to just under your armpits or leaving you with quad boobs. The girls don't tend to wear them but some girls do wear plasters over their nipples! And yes, older girls trampoline leos have an inbuilt bra.

As for the men, iirc they wear those really tight jockey pants, usually lycra under their shorts.

Don't even get me started on hairstyles

Alexander, male gymnasts wear leotards. They just wear shorts or longs over them.

Girls can cover their legs, at least at the international level but it has to be skin tight. Secton 6.2.

In gymnastics the leotards are high cut to show the leg shape and muscle shape when completing moves. 2 out of my 3 DD aregymnadts and I am fine with the no pants rule, who wants to see pants hanging out the bottom of their leotards? They also love the butt glue! It's not a big deal for the kids

As for keeping the leotard in place as showing too much thigh/hip is also A Bad Thing most of the older girls use toupee tape to keep the leo in place on their hips.

Could you get away with something like this? These are for running but don't have seams anywhere they could chafe

Bit skin tight leotards with a much lower "short" style cut would still show leg muscle etc. without the need for a need for a wax!

It's not the lack of knickers I have an issue with it's the cut of leotards around their crotch etc.
