Can I ask you if any of you gained weight when quitting?

Well done! That's fabulous you are a non smoker!
I put a bit on but I lost after a few months.
Have you used anything or just gone cold turkey?

Well done!!! I'm three weeks in and have lost weight. I am using an e-cig to deal with cravings though so not nicotine free yet. The NHS have an online cost calculator that shows you how much you save, it's really motivating.

Yay go you ! I quit 10 years ago and put on half a stone....but lost it again when I took up running the following year!

I quit 3 years ago with an ecig and have piled on weight. I don't eat anymore than I ever have so can only put it down to changes in my metabolism because I no longer smoke. Please don't let it put you off though, I feel a million times more healthy despite the weight gain and, had I realised earlier on, I honestly think it could have been prevented by just cutting portion sizes. That's all I've done now and the weight is coming back off slowly but surely. Congrats on your first 24 hours OP, my advice would be to just keep an eye on your weight and reduce portion sizes a little at a time if you start to gain, that should be enough to keep it under control.

Well done OP. I take my hat off to you. Giving up is not easy.

Thanks everyone, I must admit I'm using an e cig and so far I haven't been moody like I normally am when quitting.

I quit 5 years ago for 2 years and then stupidly started again. The thing worrying me the most is weight gain, I'm quite hungry now having ate half my Sunday lunch today.

Not sure whether I should make something small or just wait until tomorrow.

Well done BestMammy! I'm 2 weeks in with my Ecig and not craving at all, it's amazing and so much cheaper. I'm using it less than I would have smoked too so hoping I can cut it down slowly and get rid of that too in time without too much bother once I'm sure I'm a total non smoker

I gained a bit of weight initially but it came off eventually (I was desperate to quit so didn't care that I put on weight and never made any effort to lose it, it just came off again!).

For me it took about a week to not be constantly thinking about smoking, about three months until I rarely thought about it and about a year until I never thought about it.

I quit nearly 5 years ago with an e cig & still use the ecig. I had smoked for 40+ years.

You need to use the ecig differently to a fag. The nicotine is not delivered in such a concentrated fashion so taking 2/3 puffs more often is the way to go - rather than a whole fag every hour or so.

If you can drink lots of water - that will help with the hunger & getting rid of all the toxins.

Best bit if news - I have dropped a whole size in clothes since vaping as I now have so much more lung capacity & exercise a lot more.

Well done!

The Stop Smoking threads (www.mumsnet.com/Talk/stop_smoking) have lots of info on quitting & vaping & every which way of stopping.

Snap with the e-cig LuLu I'm hoping not to use it forever but it has meant I've gone longer than ever before without cigarettes for over eight years and that can't be a bad thing!

MrsJayy

We have a stop smoking thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/stop_smoking

It's been going for some time & is very friendly & encompasses all ways of giving up.

Lots of vaping help & the motto is no question is too silly to ask as vaping can be a bit of a minefield when you start.

Go to Amazon and buy Alan Carrs Easiway to Quit book, then you wont need any substitutes either.

Well done Twenty Smile

I have been offered so many cigarettes since I stopped, why do people want to see you fail? Haven't accepted a single one and tbh the smell does turn my stomach now but I don't want to offend people by saying so!

I've also been stopped for a day! Mind you i do this all the bloody time. I stopped for three years till 2007 and since then have been on and off and on and off. This time though I went to the newsagent to get 10 (smoke about 6 a day) and he didn't have any as is happening loads lately. I just thought right no way am i buying 20 at a tenner a pack so decided then and there... Gulp.

They've certainly risen in price since I first started. They were 1.80 for 10.

You could get 10 black super kings for 1.15 back in the mid 90s when I was a teen! I didn't quite smoke 20 a day, probably more like 14/15 as I'd miss a day occasionally but they're 9.20 now... gulp!
