Can I ask you if any of you gained weight when quitting?

Shamoffour Sun 19-Mar-17 16:26:15

Well done! That's fabulous you are a non smoker!
I put a bit on but I lost after a few months.
Have you used anything or just gone cold turkey?

TwentyCups Sun 19-Mar-17 16:27:53

Well done!!! I'm three weeks in and have lost weight. I am using an e-cig to deal with cravings though so not nicotine free yet. The NHS have an online cost calculator that shows you how much you save, it's really motivating.

ScrumpyBetty Sun 19-Mar-17 16:30:29

Yay go you ! I quit 10 years ago and put on half a stone....but lost it again when I took up running the following year!

Hidingtonothing Sun 19-Mar-17 16:41:42

I quit 3 years ago with an ecig and have piled on weight. I don't eat anymore than I ever have so can only put it down to changes in my metabolism because I no longer smoke. Please don't let it put you off though, I feel a million times more healthy despite the weight gain and, had I realised earlier on, I honestly think it could have been prevented by just cutting portion sizes. That's all I've done now and the weight is coming back off slowly but surely. Congrats on your first 24 hours OP, my advice would be to just keep an eye on your weight and reduce portion sizes a little at a time if you start to gain, that should be enough to keep it under control.

Grilledaubergines Sun 19-Mar-17 16:43:24

Well done OP. I take my hat off to you. Giving up is not easy.

BestMammyEver Sun 19-Mar-17 17:22:06

Thanks everyone, I must admit I'm using an e cig and so far I haven't been moody like I normally am when quitting.

I quit 5 years ago for 2 years and then stupidly started again. The thing worrying me the most is weight gain, I'm quite hungry now having ate half my Sunday lunch today.

Not sure whether I should make something small or just wait until tomorrow.

PrimeMinistersQuestionables Sun 19-Mar-17 17:24:14

CONGRATULATIONS XXX I can't comment on weight gain but hooray!! Well done you're doing great!!! Keep at it!

Sunnysky2016 Sun 19-Mar-17 17:25:47

Well done- I'm 72 hours in and going strong.....

Lulu1083 Sun 19-Mar-17 17:27:40

Well done BestMammy! I'm 2 weeks in with my Ecig and not craving at all, it's amazing and so much cheaper. I'm using it less than I would have smoked too so hoping I can cut it down slowly and get rid of that too in time without too much bother once I'm sure I'm a total non smoker

IamFriedSpam Sun 19-Mar-17 17:27:45

I gained a bit of weight initially but it came off eventually (I was desperate to quit so didn't care that I put on weight and never made any effort to lose it, it just came off again!).

For me it took about a week to not be constantly thinking about smoking, about three months until I rarely thought about it and about a year until I never thought about it.

MrsJayy Sun 19-Mar-17 17:30:30

We should have a stop smoking thread we are all over the boards atm . I am on week 6 using NRT patches and an inhalator, well done you I have put on a little weight not much .

magimedi Sun 19-Mar-17 17:33:34

I quit nearly 5 years ago with an e cig & still use the ecig. I had smoked for 40+ years.

You need to use the ecig differently to a fag. The nicotine is not delivered in such a concentrated fashion so taking 2/3 puffs more often is the way to go - rather than a whole fag every hour or so.

If you can drink lots of water - that will help with the hunger & getting rid of all the toxins.

Best bit if news - I have dropped a whole size in clothes since vaping as I now have so much more lung capacity & exercise a lot more.

Well done!

The Stop Smoking threads (https://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/stop_smoking) have lots of info on quitting & vaping & every which way of stopping.

MrsJayy Sun 19-Mar-17 17:34:32

I was out drinking last night I felt ok and a couple behind us was in and out all night smoking and the smell was horrible a few weeks ago i would want to lick them grin

TwentyCups Sun 19-Mar-17 17:35:09

Snap with the e-cig LuLu I'm hoping not to use it forever but it has meant I've gone longer than ever before without cigarettes for over eight years and that can't be a bad thing!

MrsJayy Sun 19-Mar-17 17:36:43

My top tip is fizzy water it really helps my cravings i just buy tesco own brand.

magimedi Sun 19-Mar-17 17:45:56

MrsJayy

We have a stop smoking thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/stop_smoking

It's been going for some time & is very friendly & encompasses all ways of giving up.

Lots of vaping help & the motto is no question is too silly to ask as vaping can be a bit of a minefield when you start.

DJBaggySmalls Sun 19-Mar-17 17:52:11

Go to Amazon and buy Alan Carrs Easiway to Quit book, then you wont need any substitutes either.

BestMammyEver Sun 19-Mar-17 17:58:58

Well done everyone.

It's great knowing there's others in the same situation. I feel proud of us!

Lulu1083 Sun 19-Mar-17 18:01:06

Well done Twenty smile

I have been offered so many cigarettes since I stopped, why do people want to see you fail? Haven't accepted a single one and tbh the smell does turn my stomach now but I don't want to offend people by saying so!

Str4ngedaysindeed Sun 19-Mar-17 18:01:22

I've also been stopped for a day! Mind you i do this all the bloody time. I stopped for three years till 2007 and since then have been on and off and on and off. This time though I went to the newsagent to get 10 (smoke about 6 a day) and he didn't have any as is happening loads lately. I just thought right no way am i buying 20 at a tenner a pack so decided then and there... Gulp.

MrsJayy Sun 19-Mar-17 18:04:55

The smell being rank is a good sign before when i tried to stop i loved the smell but this time it really makes me feel icky .

MrsJayy Sun 19-Mar-17 18:07:47

I am taking my mum to the chemist tomorrow she can't get 10 packets and is not wanting to pay a tenner a packet she has smoked since she was 14 so over 50 years

BestMammyEver Sun 19-Mar-17 18:20:46

They've certainly risen in price since I first started. They were 1.80 for 10.

Lulu1083 Sun 19-Mar-17 18:28:23

You could get 10 black super kings for 1.15 back in the mid 90s when I was a teen! I didn't quite smoke 20 a day, probably more like 14/15 as I'd miss a day occasionally but they're 9.20 now... gulp!
