To think the Beast is actually an abusive prick?

Somehow managed to never see the cartoon version of Beauty and the Best. Watching it with my daughter now. So the Beast kidnapped Bele's dad, coerced her into staying with him, shouts, smashes furniture and is basically a prick. If Belle was posting in Relationships I'd be telling her to LTB

Thank you! That's why I don't want to go and see it- horrible story really.

twattymctwatterson Sun 19-Mar-17 16:28:50

It actually sends a really dangerous message to young girls that the love of a good woman can "fix" an abusive man

Glossolalia Sun 19-Mar-17 16:29:15

I think this sums it up rather nicely.

Glossolalia Sun 19-Mar-17 16:29:42

It's a horrible premise for a film.

BellaGoth Sun 19-Mar-17 16:30:33

I have always suspected that Belle is suffering from the Stockholm Syndrome.

TwentyCups Sun 19-Mar-17 16:31:10

I loved this film for years, watched it again as an adult and felt the same! i haven't seen the new one yet and I wonder if it has been changed?

Andrewofgg Sun 19-Mar-17 16:31:28

And there I was thinking you were talking about The Chase . . .

miserableandinpain Sun 19-Mar-17 16:31:31

Considering emma watson is a 'feminist' i did wamder what she was doing in this film hmm

BellaGoth Sun 19-Mar-17 16:31:45

Xpost with gloss!

Aeroflotgirl Sun 19-Mar-17 16:32:03

I was thinking that!

Glossolalia Sun 19-Mar-17 16:33:36

miserable she must be a plastic feminist. Or she is pretty stupid. How could she not see through the storyline?!

DevelopingDetritus Sun 19-Mar-17 16:36:13

I thought you were talking about The Chase too. I was coming on here to say I agree with you. confused

Knittedfrog Sun 19-Mar-17 16:38:05

I'm another one who thought you were talking about The Chase!

Libitina Sun 19-Mar-17 16:38:10

I hated the Twilight books/films for the same reasons. Controlling and abusive partner that the other one does everything they can to appease.

Being an adult has ruined a lot of Disney films for me. The Little Mermaid - where a teenager who's just turned 16 has her curiosity and eagerness to learn crushed by her father, so much that she fantasises about abandoning her home and people. She then sees a guy for a few minutes, becomes convinced that she's in love, then gives up her voice for him with the encouragement of a witch who tells her that men prefer women who are sexually attractive and don't give a shit about what women have to say.

MetalMidget Sun 19-Mar-17 16:41:18

Also, Twilight is seriously creepy - elderly man in the body of a teen who goes to high school to hang around with teenagers.

Derlei Sun 19-Mar-17 16:41:36

Another one for the Chase!

JDelanysCleanHorse Sun 19-Mar-17 16:43:47

In the new one Belle's dad is imprisoned for theft (a rose in the beasts garden) and Belle takes her fathers place after tricking her father by pushing him out the prison cell and closing the door.

In the original I think it was for trespassing. I always just took it as it was a different time and place. it never occurred to me to think of the dark undertones till now.

The character of Belle in the new film is a lot more confident and strong willed than the previous version. I enjoyed the new film.

TheNaze73 Sun 19-Mar-17 16:44:02

I thought this was about the Chase as well

MissJC Sun 19-Mar-17 16:44:11

The Chase gringringrin

Well made me laugh that. Poor Beast on chase. Abusive Prick that he is. Hahaha

miserableandinpain Sun 19-Mar-17 16:45:09

Im starting to not like disney anymore sad i will never think back to my childhood the same way again. Every proncess story has something but as a child you dont see it sad

TheElephantofSurprise Sun 19-Mar-17 16:46:43

That's a buffalo? Glad you knew. It looks uncomfortably like a satyr to me. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw one in a shop window.

ProudBadMum Sun 19-Mar-17 16:46:49

It's just a kids film. I loved beauty and the beast and can't wait to see the new one

You can break down every kids film the same way of you wanted to.

Father has PTSD after seeing his wife and children killed during a home invasion. He is left with his son who is physically disabled who he smothers and doesn't believe in. Son rebels and father has to find him when he's kidnapped with the help of a female with a brain disorder.

Guess the film

ImYourMama Sun 19-Mar-17 16:47:33

It's a bloody kids film, talk about over-analysing!
