AIBU?

to not understand what the problem is?

A couple of weeks ago I went to a quiz with friends. We were in a larger group at the quiz with friends of friends, the event itself was organised by a club 2 of my friends are members of, so they knew most people there.

I like quizzes and am pretty good at them - I'm just lucky to have a memory for trivia. Sadly I don't find it anywhere near as easy to remember what my DC have on at school, or what I'm meant to be doing at home or work, as I do to tell you which monarch ruled 1702-14.

Anyway we all joined in with the quiz, I knew a fair few answers but by no means all. A few times others disagreed with my suggestion, and I went with the majority each time (some of the answers ended up being wrong). However we did win in the end, by a couple of points only.

During quiz, one friend keeps commenting on how i should 'let other people have a go, hahaha' although it really wasn't that funny. I corrected a couple of spellings (place/ people names) which were quite wrong, just by changing the spelling on our answer paper and had other friend saying that's nearly right isn't it, and when i said no, inferring i was bring difficult/ making a fuss/ putting other people down. On the night after we won friends said oh you won't be able to come next time as we did too well.

All that i was just like whatever, til today nearly 2 weeks on, friend texts that this person and that person was really annoyed my team had won and how they weren't happy at me coming back hahaha, and maybe i should answer less or dub myself down next time!

Which has now annoyed me all over again and left me thinking wtf?! Is it me and am i being completely humourless if this is all meant in a jokey way?

Your texting friend is a shit stirrer and needs a head wobble.

Wtf? Am I missing something here? Were the people who are annoyed at your team winning actually part of the team? Did they not want to win? Confused

Your 'friend' is jealous of you!

Pity she can't be happy to have a friend who's good at quizzes. I'd love to have you on my team.

Just smile next time and say "Aren't kittens lovely?"
That shouldn't threaten anybody.

Oddballs all of them.

Jealous bitch. Ignore.

She would rather lose than see her 'friend' do well. This is not a friend.

I think the problem here is that you were correcting other people's spellings etc. It's supposed to be fun, people don't want to feel like they're being marked by teacher.

I have to say I've been in this situation once at a quiz where a member was pointing out missed apostrophes and minor spelling errors and it went down like a bucket of cold sick.

Thanks, I was starting to think I was going mad. The people who have complained were on other teams. Friends who made comments on the night on my team.

I really try not to come across as a know it all, I'm always happy if I think it's X and everyone else says Y, to go with Y, so this all was a little hurtful.

I was once in a team which won and on the way out, a man from another team said, "I don't know how you lot won, as you didn't have a man on your tea." When we asked why on earth that made any difference, he said that he couldn't understand how we had as one of the rounds was about sport and "women don't know anything about sport" Shock

YANBU. They are just jealous and defensive. Some people feel very threatened by intelligent or knowledgeable people.

The only spellings I corrected was where I thought we'd lose a point - so if someone had written a minor mistake, like say Andy Warhole...i didn't change it. But I would change the Seashells to Seychelles if that makes sense (those weren't the actual answers but should give the idea).

This is the thing though, if they're playing to have fun, they'd let things like the Andy Warhol thing go - because to them it's probably more important that the atmosphere stays fun than they lose a point. It comes across really badly, like you're putting down the person you're correcting. It probably spoiled their fun having thing like that pointed out. It's never nice to have errors like that pointed out, the inference is that the person that you're correcting is thick or ignorant.

If they're playing for fun rather than to win I can imagine they would have been annoyed if the atmosphere was spoiled. It's....unnecessary. Often you don't lose points on spellings anyway.

bill the OP is saying the same thing- she would let things like 'Andy Warhole' go.

I can be a SPAG pedant internally but I wouldn't correct anyone unless they asked. If you felt you might lose points you could say 'I think that spelling may be incorrect' but correcting answers on the sheet even when other people say it's fine as nearly correct is only going to make other people feel like shit and you look like you're pointing it out.

It's a pub quiz not a dissertation.

BillSykesDog · 16/03/2017 21:18

Ah, my mistake on that one. Apols OP. But generally if a team are playing for fun it is seen as bad form to correct.

Report
weebarra · 16/03/2017 21:20

Is it? Even if the spelling mistake would mean the answer is wrong?

Report
HappyFlappy · 16/03/2017 21:25

Blimey!

So if one quiz team has a member who knows stuff, the other teams can lodge an objection? That seems very reasonable, doesn't it? How does anyone ever win if the only acceptable team members know nowt?

It's jealousy.

Like you, I have a mind full of useless information (but I couldn't tell you what I had for breakfast tis morning). When I used to do pub quizzes, they used to fight to have me on the team! However the bloke that a PP mentioned would have found me very acceptable, as I knew sod all about sport. Grin

Unless it's a really serious league then yes. Or a big prize. But the overwhelming majority of quizzes where you're just playing for fun and a few beers/bottle of whiskey - really not done.

Jeez, who gets pissed off with someone doing well in a quiz, when they have attended a quiz night?!! I am crap at quizzes, but I would never think to belittle and be unpleasant to somebody who was good. Instead I would just be thinking about how I can poach them for my team...
They are jealous.

JessieMcJessie · 16/03/2017 21:36

Fucking hell, they all sound mental. People who feel threatened by others' intelligence really should find things other than pub quizzes to fill their evenings. I would have corrected just like you OP, but would probably have fought harder for answers I knew were right rather than go with the majority, and then would have expected the majority to bloody well thank me when we got the point Smile.

weebarra · 16/03/2017 21:39

Bill - it is done where I do my pub quizzing. It's pretty competitive and people are glad to have me on their team. I'm crap at some things but good for random shite like assassinated Prime Minister. Our prize is £20 from the pub, we save it up and have a good night out at the end of the year.
