Independent Secondary or State Grammar (WGHS, Woodhouse Grove, North Halifax Grammar)

Considering Independent secondary Wakefield Girls High and Woodhouse Grove when offer from State Grammar North Halifax Grammar.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience or view on these schools? We are considering these for our DD for year 7 in Sept. Visited each once and did some online search. So far WGHS seems to get the best results but not best facilities. Good vibe of Woodhouse Grove but results not great and possibility of North Halifax but limited extra curricular.
So really could do with some opinions.
Thanks in advance!

Go with what is the best fit for your child.

Where are you based? If Wakefield NHG is quite a trek
North Halifax doesn't get as good results as Crossley Heath but not far off. I know a few kids there and they seem to be doing well and enjoying themselves. However, in terms of facilities the 2 Halifax Grammars are never going to be able to compete with the Private schools in terms of resources

Looked at a few other schools in the area but decided not to consider further for various reasons.

Thanks POW and Hgreen, we are in Bradford so all three schools around equal distance from us.

You are being unreasonable to post this in AIBU

My daughter left North Halifax Grammar School sixth form last summer. We were very happy with it, my daughter liked it and made lots of friends. Has nice vibe. Facilities aren't great as others have mentioned but they were undergoing building work when she was there and they are opening a new sports hall very soon. Teaching is very good apart from a couple of teachers in her latter years who weren't, although one left. I always left any event feeling inspired and grateful for the education she was receiving. Behaviour is very good and pupils present as polite and well mannered (you will have noticed this if you attended the open evening where a student will show you around). It is a school teachers send their children to and one teacher parent described it to me as a "doing" school, pupils are always doing something. Strong on music. Expectations are high. Some parents might be put off by building and surroundings but it's what goes on inside that matters. Pastoral care is excellent.

Hi Pieapplecrush, this is helpful, thank you. Looking at the extra curricular activities list given by the NHGS we didn't see any music clubs. Was your daughter involved in music?

Hi I know this is a very old post, but I wondered if anyone can help, I’m considering north Halifax and crossley Heath for my daughter and not sure on which I should put as my 1st choice? Does anyone know if they have different specialisms ? And any parents that can share their experience of the either of the schools ? Many thanks

Sarjest · 28/01/2021 23:19

Samah123, you’re too late for this year’s entry. Presumably your DD will be taking the 11+ exam in September so unless she makes the grade it would be pointless putting either on the form. Travelling times/ ease should inform your decision. Take a look at the virtual tours, too. I suggest you repost in Secondary Education or take a look at the Forum on elevenplusexams.co.uk.

Hi Sarjest, thanks for your message. my daughter has passed her exam and she will be starting this sept. We didn’t have the opportunity to go to the open evening because of Covid. I have put crossley and then nghs and wondered whether I should swap these around.?? Both place are roughly the same distance in travel time, 5-10 mins difference, crossley is further. Do you have any experience of the schools?

PM’d you,Samah123.
