AIBU?

AIBU to NOT buy 9 y.o. DD a doll?

DD would love an Our Generation doll for her 9th birthday. AIBU unreasonable to say she is too old to receive one for her birthday although I am very happy for her to play with the huge number of dolls she already owns? Problem is none of her existing dolls are Our Generation and "all her friends" have them. My issue is they are not cheap and surely her doll playing days are limited now. On the other hand how lovely she still wants to play with dolls instead of electronic toys and maybe I should encourage this for as long as possible? What do you think oh wise mums?

Buy her one, if she wants it, she is 9, still a child.

You should buy her a packet of Lambert and Butler, 6 pack of Stella and a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey.
She's obviously cracking on and her 'doll playing days are limited now' Hmm

If it's within your budget just get it for her. She's 9 not 19! Also my parents always got me presents that I "should" like not the ones I wanted (and it wasn't like I was asking for ponies or super expensive games consoles or something) and I hated it.

dd1 just asked for a new Sylvanians set for her 10th birthday, and I was happy that she wanted something microchip-free, after having gadgetry last year.

I think plenty of girls this age are still into toys.

Get her the doll OP. Mine have all played with dolls until nearly ten.
It's her birthday FFS, you have strange ideas on age appropriate toys.

My nine year old only wants things she's seen on youtube.
Buy the doll and thank your lucky stars she doesn't want a makeup tutorial at MAC.

I got my dd a Rapunzel doll for her 9th birthday a couple of weeks ago.

She asked for it. I didn't even consider that she might be too old for it. I think it's lovely that she asked for a doll and not a phone, or Ipad or makeup etc.

She likes to comb its hair. It makes her happy.

I'd buy the doll tbh, at this age she will look after it and if she grows out of it quickly you can get something back for it.
It's what she wants, so you should pander to her for a birthday present imo

My 9yo is still massively into dolls and soft toys as well as her iPod and making dance videos. Get the poor kid the doll if you have the means to do so and let her grow up in her own time.

I got dd one for Christmas, she's 10. We got it in Tk Maxx so it was a bit cheaper if it's the coat that's putting you off.

9 isn't too old for a doll.

I played with dolls until I was 12/13, and this was less than 10 years ago, so around the beginning of the tech boom. So she might yet get a few years of play out of the new ones!

Would she be happy with a designafriend doll from argos? They are cheaper but exactly the same. And come in wrapped in tissue in a nice cardboard box. DD 8 got one for xmas and she plays with hers a lot.
It would be one thing if she was say 13 and wanted one when none of her friends played with them but at 8/9 they are quite the in things with most of the girls at DDs school. (DD is 8 but one of the youngest in her year so a lot of her friends are already 9)

YABU Hmm she's only 9! It's only a doll... What's the issue?

I played with my dolls of all varieties secretly until I was well into my mid teens! It's sad children are expected to grow up so fast, get her the doll she may well enjoy playing with it for years to come! I'm looking forward to Dd being old enough for these things as I am keen to play again!

If that's what she's asked for then buy it. You can sometimes get them cheaper on amazon, I got one that was £45 in Smyths for £25 on Amazon after setting up a price alert.

I'm really not being mean. I absolutely hate that its becoming acceptable for primary school age children to have mobile phones and limitless access to games consoles. So many of them have forgotten how to simply play imaginatively with a toy.

I think my issue is that so many of my friends now buy electronic gadgets for similar aged DC that I was afraid of it looking as though DD was too babyish in comparison.

Obviously with my sensible head on a doll is a lovely gift for a 9 year old and I should just ignore the tech brigade.

DD will be delighted to get one as a surprise on her birthday. Thanks to all for the great advice!

She is 9 not 19. If her age is the only thing stopping you getting it her for a birthday present then yes YABU. Children grow up too soon IMO these days.

I am a bit disappointed after looking at Smyths toys store, there is not much variation in dolls ethnicity, just white caucasian ones.

I remember being bought my Last doll. a beautiful china doll that I have treasured. I'm sure my mother had the same thought, that I was getting a bit big for it all but I wanted it. and she told me it was the last one.

I bought my daughter an Our Generation doll for her 9th birthday. She never asked for it, and has a similar doll already. I think it's me hanging onto these days. I didn't know the girls all have them, just thought they were a lovely traditional doll that she could pass onto a daughter of her own one day, if she has one.

I don't think it matters whether she is too old for it or not. It is what she wants.

How would you feel if you asked for a particular perfume for your birthday and were told it was for younger women and you were too old for it?
