To ask what stopped my PMT in pregnancy ?

I've always had awful PMT getting overwhelmingly sad or angry. It stopped while I was pregnant but has returned now (I've started periods again, 3 months after DS was born even though I'm breastfeeding)

What hormone will have stopped pmt when I was pregnant and can I replicate it (happy to do so with birth control)

Sorry I can't help but I would love to know this too. I felt so great when pregnant and it's so horrid to have the pmt back again, also when breastfeeding.

My GP has started me on the combined pill for awful PMT - to the point of being really paranoid and over sensitive. I've been taking it for 3 months now and have seen a marked improvement.

Maybe I'm being thick but if you're pregnant you're not pre-menstrual, you are temporarily not menstruating at all so if you aren't PM you can't have PMT. Surely that's why being pregnant stopped it!

If I am being thick I apologise

You don't have the same drop in oestrogen towards the ends of the month that you do when you have periods.. I also read that there are 3 types of oestrogen and when you are pregnant you have more of the one that affects moods in a positive way.
I found the pill helped with my pmt as the periods weren't real periods.
Right now I have horrific pmt as can't take the pill!

I would love to know also I've been on the pill before and regardless my moods are always up and down quite dramatically but when I was pregnant it was like this peace descended and I was happy and calm throughout the pregnancy so if I can replicate that hormone I would do it

Confused I thought it was just me! Surely if you are pregnant you can't be pre-menstrual...?

Have a look here

www.thesurreyparkclinic.co.uk/conditions/premenstrual-syndrome/

I suspect that something like depo might help (although it turned me into a nutcase) or the combined pill.

You can't really replicate it - it's the absence of pregnancy that means the PMT has come back if that makes sense.

Sorry you go through such a tough time - it's awful.

She is asking why from a chemical point of view.

I get PMDD, and I take Zoloft for it. I don't know if you can take that while breastfeeding, though.

Yes asking from a chemical/hormonal aspect

  • thanks for advice and suggestions so far

Sorry for those who also suffer it, and useful to know what might help - I guessed some form of contraception might help but I'm so cautious about talking one that might make it worse as I've always been really sensitive to the pill too (but am guessing there may be one that suits?)

Have considered Zoloft... has it helped?

It's been amazing. I'm on a very low dosage, so I still get a little emotional before my period, but not out of control like I was before.

That's really helpful, thanks Smile

As part of my PMT I get horrendous migraines. My GP is convinced they are hormone related (I do get some when mega stressed too, but that's another story) It was so blissful being migraine free eh. I was pregnant.

I take yazmin for pmdd. It works amazing but generally isn't advised to use until 6 mths if breastfeeding (the pill can drop milk supply, I began taking it around 16 mths I think & bf until 2.5yrs)

Is baby feeding alot overnight? The overnight feeds are what ups prolactin & stops periods. If baby is feeding all night (like most do!) I'd be speaking to a dr about why periods have returned when your prolactin should be high. If your adding a bottle or two at night it might be worth trying to move to exclusively bf-of you wanted to- & see if that stops or reduces your periods. Good luck, pmt/pmdd is hell if not controled in my experience

Marmarlady - yes I get the migraines too (DH knew my period was returning before I did due to my pre period headache)

Wobbly, he does feed loads overnight (at least every 2 hours) so that's really really helpful, I will book to see the doctor
