To criticise DHs homemade shoe rack?

I feel awful, he's just huffed off.
He's just made this shoe storage thing for our v small hallway. I wasn't keen on the colour or style really but didn't want to criticise him when he was actually doing something helpful for once. My only criteria was it must not be too big.

Now he's finished and put it in...and it's too big.
It's very helpful to have but leaves very little space coming up and and down the stairs imo. Or am I nit picking?

Too wide in both directions.

Wishiwasmoiradingle2017 Fri 10-Mar-17 20:03:33

Do you have a dc with only 1 foot op??

Shoedisaster Fri 10-Mar-17 20:03:53

THis one might give a better idea of the lack of space

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway Fri 10-Mar-17 20:04:02

Oh those cutie little shoes!
<wibble>
It doesn't leave too much space really, does it. sad

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar Fri 10-Mar-17 20:04:44

Aww it looks like he's made a decent job of it, I was expecting a monstrosity! smile

Not a great place for it though, it does seem to leave very little space at the bottom of the stairs. Could it go against the other wall (So blocking only part of the stairs) or elsewhere (front door, under the stairs, utility, behind kitchen door?)

ChampagneSocialist1 Fri 10-Mar-17 20:05:02

I see what you mean about it getting in the way. Could he tilt it forwards towards the wall to give more space

Petalbird Fri 10-Mar-17 20:05:14

It does look too big unless you have some really big shoes that are not on there. Could have also done with being rounded at one end so you have more walking space

ligersaremyfavouriteanimal Fri 10-Mar-17 20:05:52

I agree it looks tight, though a nice looking cabinet. Is there anywhere else it could fit?

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar Fri 10-Mar-17 20:05:53

Xpost with the second picture. It is quite massive!

TheUnicorns Fri 10-Mar-17 20:06:05

I think it's fine personally. Looks like he's done a good job too, I'd be quite happy with that!

WhereYouLeftIt Fri 10-Mar-17 20:06:29

Thst does create a bit of a pinch-point. Is it worth running a book on when he'll bang his own knee on it coming down the stairs too fast? Put me down for Thursday morning grin.

Shoedisaster Fri 10-Mar-17 20:06:42

Wishiwasmoiradingle2017 how bad would you feel if I did?! I don't fwiw grin

He has worked hard which is why I feel bad for criticising. It's just pretty big isn't it.

ParadiseCity Fri 10-Mar-17 20:07:47

I was expecting a really shite thing but that is good! I could live with that and I'm sure you'll get used to the space. I have similar amount of space due to shoe thing and it's better than shoes lying about.

PragmaticWench Fri 10-Mar-17 20:08:13

Could he take two inches off the entire back of it?

Nospringflower Fri 10-Mar-17 20:08:44

It looks great even if it takes up a lot of space.

outabout Fri 10-Mar-17 20:09:04

It looks about the right dimensions for adult size shoes. Perhaps a compromise is to actually use it somewhere else as being so close to stairs is not good anyway?
Looks quite smart though.

Shoedisaster Fri 10-Mar-17 20:09:05

Oh shit I've just ripped one of the top bits off trying to move it! It's not the most sturdy confused

Phalarope Fri 10-Mar-17 20:09:29

It's huge. There will be a lot of shin-banging. But I think you probably have to be more grateful for it. Sorry.

(I would be doing ungrateful nitpicking about the design - isn't it just going to rapidly become some shelves of mud? I thought shoeracks were a bit more open and ventilated)

Crumbs1 Fri 10-Mar-17 20:11:58

I feel sorry for men sometimes. If you wanted something specific and knew you wouldn't like is effort, why did you not make it yourself? You're being mean.
