To think LGBT talks should actually cover LGBT?

So today dd(16) had a LGBT talk for an hour with her year. She came home and told me that actually, nothing at all about LGB was mentioned, it was all about the T, how to avoid being transphobic and the 70+ other made up genders. Being a lesbian, dd asked during the talk to cover more on LGB next time, to which she was told 'gay people have enough rights, and trans people are the victims being left behind'. They were also saying stuff about pink and blue brains, and how clothing can be an indicator of your true gender Hmm

Aibu to think LGBT talks should actually focus on LGBT and be inclusive of everyone, and not trail on about different coloured brains? Or is it just me?

God i'd be furious if anyone started the pink brain blue brain shit at dd's school.

Do they get people in to talk about this, or is it school staff? I think i'd be bombarding them with scientific literature proving brains don't have a sex.

Talk about gender dysphoria, sure. If my clothing expressed my gender, i'm a bloody bloke.

From what I gather for a while now the lgb element don't want the t and the q+¥÷¥=&$&@((/& made up bollocks attached to them.

Most LGBT talks I've ever been to have been the opposite and totally ignored anything to do with trans which is a shame since trans people face more discrimination than any other group. I'm also seriously dubious that on mumsnet every day there's a new thread bashing trans rights with some supposed outrage committed by trans people or on their behalf so I don't take any OP's word for it about any supposed "talk" or "video" that's been shown to their child.

Mumsnet has an obsession about trans people. In real life I've never encountered any of this nonsense.

Whatever you want to call it there is evidence that some people are born deeply uncomfortable with their body. Not just how they dress, or what their hobbies are but their genitalia and it causes them a lot of distress. It is important that these people are not discriminated against. This has nothing to do with pink brain blue brain and there is a large amount of evidence for it.

really it was 2 members of staff and someone who came in to speak.

Body dysmorphia is a psychiatric condition that should be treated as such. You don't say to an anorexic "here's the latest way to starve yourself keep going fatty" or to someone who wants their leg cut off "sure why not it's only a limb!"

So why, when people want genitals mutilating do we support it?

Are you sure the talk was labelled as a LGBT one? Just asking as my niece had a transgender/transphobia talk at their school earlier this year, and LGB was covered at a later date.

Iam yes, I know. However gender dysphoria wasn't mentioned at all, neither was LGB. Just pink brains, blue brains and the 70 other genders Confused

Live no, it was an LGBT one. There was a letter sent home about it and it was on dd's timetable this week.

I'd be furious - they are basically saying women wear certain types of clothes and think a certain way, which is clearly sexist bollocks. Your poor daughter :(

We're transphobic because we want to issues relating to gay, lesbian and bisexual people covered in an LGBT session?

Right-o then.

70+ other made up genders

maybe going off on a random tangent but i'm not that old (mid twenties) and i'd like to think i was fairly bright (Biology was one of my weaker subjects though) and not too socially inept but i always used sex and gender as interchangeable and i had no idea of this whole 70+ genders thing. it seems to come from a need to label literally every variation of a person, instead of saying you are a man, you are a woman, you don't need another label.

like i said i don't understand it, and i'm willing to be listen to other's more informed but i do think a lot of it currently is nonsense

Hey there may2017ttc.

I'm a trans woman and I'm curious about this transphobia that you seem to think is going on here. Personally I haven't seen any transphobia on this thread (or anywhere else on Mumsnet) however could you please show me where this transphlobia is so I can address it please?

and yes i know sex and gender aren't very happily mixed on MN (gender is a social construct!) but i don't see the harm in using them interchangeably if you are just talking about whether someone is a man or woman.

I really wish we could disassociate from the 'T.' One is about sexuality, whereas the other is about feeling that one is in the 'wrong' body. The two are not related. And in the present climate, the 'T' wants to erase the 'L'. Funny how it's almost always MTF's that thing gay women should sleep with them - suggestion that gay men should date pre-op FTM's is usually called homophobia, r.e. twat-face Owen Jones.

Pissed off about this gender nonsense. By their logic, I am a man. Except I'm most definitely not. I'm an ordinary gay woman.

The LGBs have enough rights now, just like the women. Time to focus on the men.

or to someone who wants their leg cut off "sure why not it's only a limb!"

That has been done though, as well as a doctor blinding a person who felt they should be blind. It's madness

tumble wow, fair play to you for continuing to challenge all the posters who pop in to these threads to cry transphobia. FlowersI've yet to see a single one of them respond to you with actual examples.

The LGBs have enough rights now, just like the women. Time to focus on the men.

i have actually been giving this some thought and thinking about the ways other people have gained more rights/ standard of living i do find it somewhat hard to criticise trans people for trying to improve their living and gain more rights.

i mean feminists i always hear say to men "its not feminism's job to improve your living, if you want to improve your life and other men you're entitled to try and do it yourself " often seen when moaning about scouts/ girl guides or court punishments, and the Black Lives Matter movement and the way its explained often as "yes every life matters, but this isn't about you" type mantra.

so trans people are going out trying to improve their lives and it's meeting opposition (just like everyone else) but they're essentially doing what they've been told and tried to improve their lives. i think the landscape currently is ripe for a lot of social change with everyone trying to be politically correct which of course is great but out of being scared of being seen as a bigot its allowing some batshit crazy things (but then i think a lot of gender politics are )

Transrights activists aren't fighting for trans gendered people to have their own rights - they're fighting for them to have women's rights. And women are just expected to STFU and move aside and let them trample all over them.
