Renting a room. Live in Landlord is super creepy. Extremely germaphobic I'm guessing, gives me regular talks on how to clean (I'm a clean person I know how to do it) tells me to tell my visitors how they should be using the toilet (men have to sit down apparently) and how they should wash their hands, that's weird right?
He hangs around outside my room and waits for me to come out and always has something else to show me how to do (the other day was how to do the washing up). He also just stands outside my room at night, it's very odd. In fairly sure he goes in my room when I'm out even though I lock it.

And all of this I can put up with, but twice now he has locked me IN the house. I can't leave, I'm on the top floor so I can't even hop out of a window. I have places I need to be and I do not like the thought of being locked in somewhere!!

I need to move but without my deposit back I can't afford it. He won't give it back I don't think because I haven't been here long enough (he says have to be here 4 months, I've been here two weeks, that's how much I hate it) he hasn't put it in a deposit scheme as he said it's an advance payment that will be given back at the end of did my stay after 4 months. I never signed anything jut said 'ok' in an email. I'm screwed aren't I?

If he hasn't put it in a deposit protection scheme then he's fucked

Definitely move asap that's seriously creepy behaviour

He has to by law put it into a dps, Its not his choice.
I would move out if I were you, Try and find a place asap, He sounds weird.

Move asap, have you got a friend you can stay with temporarily? You need to get out of there, seriously worrying behaviour if he's locking you in! How is he doing that, do you not have a key? Does he claim he's doing it accidently? I'd also be so worried about him waiting outside your bedroom at night!

harder a deposit scheme doesn't apply here, as the OP is a lodger, not a tenant.

However, if the OP hasn't signed anything in relation to notice and her deposit she can just give the LL "reasonable" notice and he has to return the deposit.

Do you have a receipt for the deposit OP?

I can't, I have enough money for one months rent, not a deposit too.

Even in a deposit protection scheme you wouldn't get it back until after you'd moved out

Do you have any friends who can lend it to your OP? What about getting an overdraft of a credit card with a cash advance?

If he locks you in call the police! What if there was a fire? That's super creepy.

Bank transaction is good! That's record of you paying him.

Tell him that legally you don't have to give notice, and if he doesn't return your deposit then you will have to take him to the small claims court.

I thought landlords had to put the deposit in a legal account or something, you could check with the council. Why is he locking you in? So he is holding you against your will, you could call the police. Maybe you should tell him that. He does sound very weird. I would be leaving too but check about the deposit.

summer that's true for tenants, but not for lodgers.

I have no friends locally, no one to lend me money and bad credit so no credit cards. I'll just have to ride it out. I hate this :(

He locks the door to your actual bedroom while you're in it?

No, the front door. He's only given me one key, I don't know how he's locked it but I can't get out of it. I've tried every single way of opening it and it won't open. It opens fine when he's home but when he goes out I can't open it.

When he locks you in, call the police as he's holding you against your will. Talk to citizens advice about him invading your personal space. I think you need to find a way to leave ASAP. Even if you have to talk to work about an advance on wages to get a deposit.

Damn I wish MN had an edit button. Then talk to him about needing a front door key - point out that its broken as you can't get out, and you'd hate to have to call the fire brigade if you needed to get out.

When he locks you in next time, contact the police. You have asked him to stop & asked for a key & as he won't you need to take steps to protect yourself.

I can sort the moving out. I'm more worried about right now, I have anxiety and being locked in is making me panic a lot.

how did the last conversations go when he locked you in The other times? Did you ask him how to open the door? If it's a certain type of lock you may need to push the handle downwards then unlock it.

Go to citizens advice now. They're geared up for accurate advice and will be able to recommend option
