For that budget I would go with an experience rather than a gift, and ignore typical 30th gifts as everyone will get them

Have a look at buyagift, don't necessarily have to buy from there but will give you ideas of experiences. They normally have a good code around though, so if you do decide to buy from there keep checking for a voucher first as if there isn't one now there will be soon. Honestly, I think I would ask him. That way you will be sure to get something he would like.

If you are set on a surprise, then I would go for an experience or something like cufflinks that he can keep.
