I was cycling and came to some trafficlights. A woman was looking at her phone so I banged on her window and shouted get off your phone. She tried to throw water at me and drove off, would police be interested?

DianaMemorialJam Sat 04-Mar-17 21:46:04

Fucking yes! Report the mad bint.

RedHelenB Sat 04-Mar-17 21:46:20

Were there cameras?

whatonaschoolnight Sat 04-Mar-17 21:47:16

Yes, report.

RedBullBlood Sat 04-Mar-17 21:47:35

Probably not. (You waited long enough for her to open the window, chuck water then drive off?)

ijustheartdietcoke Sat 04-Mar-17 21:47:40

dont think so?

Sparklingbrook Sat 04-Mar-17 21:47:41

It's not really your job to go banging on windows and laying the law down.

ijustheartdietcoke Sat 04-Mar-17 21:48:18

not really Red coz she wound down her window I thought she was going to shout back and she sprayed water in my face instead

MellieMGrant Sat 04-Mar-17 21:49:01

You what? If I was stopped at traffic lights and checked my phone and some mental cyclist banged on my window I'd probably chuck something worse than water at them.

Is it illegal now to have your phone while stationary? I haven't driven for a while. Even so you were oddly combative.

ijustheartdietcoke Sat 04-Mar-17 21:49:38

Yes it is illegal!!

Vanillamanilla1 Sat 04-Mar-17 21:49:40

^ what sparkling said ^

Userone1 Sat 04-Mar-17 21:49:40

Yea I'm struggling with why you would be banging on someone's window!

If you were that bothered just take registration!

antimatter Sat 04-Mar-17 21:49:55

£200 fine for her and 6 points on her driving license...

SuperTrumper Sat 04-Mar-17 21:50:32

Mellie - yes it is illegal. Engine needs to be completely switched off for it to be legal. I learnt that on a course blush

Sweets101 Sat 04-Mar-17 21:50:46

Why ask MN? Ring 101 and ask them.
Banging on people's car windows isn't a great idea. Where you riding in the middle of the road or did she spray it across her passenger seat? She must have been pretty cross to do that.

Giraffe31 Sat 04-Mar-17 21:51:01

Yes I would report her. It is illegal to use your phone with the engine on even if you are stopped at traffic lights, parked up or in a traffic jam. As long as the engine is running it is against the law

Sweets101 Sat 04-Mar-17 21:51:05

actual rules here

The rules are the same if you’re stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic.

Userone1 Sat 04-Mar-17 21:51:16

Is it illegal to start banging on someone's window when they driving!

HelloCanYouHearMe Sat 04-Mar-17 21:51:22

Mellie i believe, but will wait to be corrected, that yes - at the lights with your engine running, it is still illegal to check your phone.

you should be pulled up and engine off

Sparklingbrook Sat 04-Mar-17 21:51:39

Your thread title is somewhat misleading.

TheFairyCaravan Sat 04-Mar-17 21:52:02

So, in the space of 5 minutes you've said she threw water at you, tried to throw water at you and sprayed water in your face. 🤔

Which one was it? confused

DrivingMeBonkers Sat 04-Mar-17 21:52:34

Yes, even if at traffic lights, however that doesn't give you the right to thump her property.

www.gov.uk/using-mobile-phones-when-driving-the-law

It’s illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device while driving, or riding a motorcycle.

The rules are the same if you’re stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic.

Sweets101 Sat 04-Mar-17 21:52:34

She won't get in trouble for being on the phone on your say so, she might be in trouble re throwing water at you.

Sparklingbrook Sat 04-Mar-17 21:52:47

I was told it's engine off and keys out of the ignition too before using a phone. But I am not a police officer.
