Would bunk beds for a parent and child be absolutely ridiculous?

Trying to work out logistics of having a baby/child in a flat with only one bedroom. There's a lounge, bathroom, TINY kitchen and bedroom. None of the rooms are large.

I was thinking of maybe having bunk beds in the bedroom but is this just stupid ... ?

Good plan. Should be fine for a few years! There are bunks that have a double bed sized bottom bunk with a single top bunk, something like that should work really well.

It's not completely crazy. How old is your child?

If the child is under 5 they'll need to be on the bottom bunk - would you wake them climbing up to the top bunk?

If they're over 5, go for it.

Well, when they are tiny, you only need a small crib, and then a cot. The ikea ones are designed for small apartments.
Or, you could co-sleep.
But the amount of peripheral crap that babies accumulate is phenomenal!

What happens when the child is older though? How do you know you will be able to afford a bigger place for when the child definitely needs their own bedroom?

Is the flat big enough to begin with? Can you move to a bigger place before you have a baby?

You could make the lounge a 'hidden' bedroom for you, when your child is older, I guess, with the right furniture.
Particularly if you and dc could share the same wardrobe in the bedroom.

I'm not too worried about the baby stage, it's when they start walking I'm a bit Problem is childcare fees. Once I don't need childcare I can afford somewhere better, so that's till the age of 4/5?

It's recommended for people to share with their baby for the first 6 months anyway. And then it's pretty common for the baby to stay in your room up until toddler age if they wake a lot in the night.

So if you're talking about one child I don't think it's going to be a problem until they are say 18 months+ and outgrowing a cot. If you're not even pregnant yet that's a fair way off - see where you are then.

If you're planning to stay in the flat long term, I don't think the bunk bed plan would work until your child is say 3+ because it wouldn't really be safe having a 2 yo in a top bunk. So you might have an awkward period when the child is too big for a cot but too little for a bunk bed. Would the bedroom fit a double bed and a toddler bed/cotbed next to it?

I'd give the room to the baby and have a pull out bed in the lounge. Bunk beds won't work until the kid is 5+.

Surely a sofa bed in the living room would be the simplest solution.

Ah cross post. If you have no partner that's a lot easier as you can go on the top bunk and child can go on the bottom.

or just share a double bed with your child.

Why not a single bed for you and a toddler bed for your child once they've outgrown the cot?
