Massive World Book Day/ parenting fail!

I have been really happy with my preparedness for world book day this year. I had a terrible head cold and was ill the end of last week Sinuitis headache - edging into migraine level headache and I was exhausted so I slept a lot through Thursday/Friday/Saturday was still feeling ropey Monday but I went into town and gathered the things I needed to make two costumes for WBD.

Finished off the costumes yesterday - and I was happy with the results dd1 and dd2 looked great in them. All good.

Dd1 is in a different school to dd2 she sets off earlier and went off looking ace - so far so good - pic on FB for the relatives.

DD2 got dressed up and I took a picture she asked me to put that on FB as she likes the nice comments from various Aunties and Uncles etc. We set off Then she see's some children she knows from reception/ yr 1 - we are only a few minutes from school so we were virtually there. The children ask dd what she is wearing and she tells them and I say "you know for World Book day". Mother of these children (the younger one is wearing a tutu so I thought she was dressed up too..) just looks at me and says nowt. We carry on through school side gate and I notice complete lack of costumes - I say to dd2 "are you sure it is today?" She says "yes - we were talking about it this yesterday!" - clearly I had missed the bit in the newsletter where they said they were doing World Book day - - not on world book day but a week or so later!

So my dd2 school is doing WBD next week - because that makes sense, and I have dragged poor dd2 to school dressed up on the wrong frickin day - I feel terrible and stupid about it and pissed off with the school. I imagine if I had been doing all the pick ups the last week instead of sharing them with dh I may have had that useful convo with another parent where the date would have come up. But I can't be sure of that - or obviously if I had noticed the date in the newsletter - poor dd2!

Aww poor thing.

It's not the school's fault though.

Oh the relevance of the fb thing is that as I do the walk of the shamed parent back through the playground I see a comment from another parent at dd2 school saying 'don't tell me it is today I had been told it was next week!' so if I had got that comment sooner I could have done a last minute save. Nightmare.

Ahh I've done this before - DD1 was sent to school as Pocahontas. You'll look back and laugh in a couple of days. No one is judging you, and even if they did, so what, fuck 'em Flowers

Our primary is doing dress up day on a completely different day too but I saw several superheroes, a princess and a footballer walking to school today Grin We did get an email about it with dates - before half term Grin

I think it's quite a common and understandable mistake to make, in our case the other local school (secondary) is dressing up today and a lot of parents have dc in both schools.

A boy in our dd's class came as a Victorian a week early for Victorian dressing up day last year, he thought it was hilarious fortunately!

Hopefully your dd is fine about it and is quite likely not the only one!

Why are they doing it on a different day? That's just fucking stupid.

Someone came into my sons school today in a lovely costume.
Except this school does book character day in the autumn term. Don't ask me why, they just do.
I felt awful for that child, their costume was so nice!
Still, the TA was brilliant, very nice about it and just said it was no problem and they'd find a spare uniform.
I always have a panic on dress up days that we've got the wrong day. I took to putting uniform in a bag and taking it with me just in case!

A few schools around here are doing it on a different day too, but I'm not sure why.

OP, I was surprised to read on to the end and find you have a DH.

Did he not help you with any of it, especially as you weren't well?

Your DH is also capable of talking to other parents, teachers and reading the newsletter...

World book has gone stupid now. Many schools are getting rid of the dressing up bullshit following complaints.

A child in my child's class turned up earlier this week in full on costume and face paint. Mum had got the wrong day. I admit to laughing to myself about it when I got home but I'm sure it will be forgotten about by the end of the week.
I've had the shame of turning up at school on inset days, and holidays too. We've all done something daft Grin

My Dd goes to pre-school so doesn't wear a uniform anyway. I wouldn't have known about dressing her up today if I hadn't had mentioned it to the staff but if she didn't dress up it wouldn't have mattered anyway

Yes dh helped out with taking kids to school and bringing me tea and toast etc. but he assumed (as did I) that WBD was on WBD and I get the newsletter email so he didn't see it. So I don't hold him responsible - this one is on me. I don't mind the dressing up I just hate that I got the date wrong - it is that dawning comprehension of a fuck up - which is just not a good feeling...

I know worse things happen at sea. Cheers.

we get the newsletter in paper form in school bag as well - but that is not always seen in time - or at all.

My children's primary do WBD dress up later because the children dress up for Saint David's day too and parents didn't like two dress up days in one week.

Does you school have a school Facebook page or Class Dojo type thing? These have saved my skin many times.

They are dressing up for WBD on a day that isn't WBD? No wonder you got it wrong, I bet you weren't the only one.

It's a bit silly of the school. Why on earth do it on a different day?

Oh there isnt a parent alive who hasnt turned up on inset day and felt a fool.
I know i have and once my child forgot to mention dressing up day and in those days no email and letter got lost so i was mortified then as well. .
Forget it and laugh it off.

There are lots of downsides to living next to a primary school, but this is definitely one of the perks! I always check out of the window before leaving on the school 'run' to make sure the children going past are wearing costumes or not on days like this. Grin

My niece went in dressed up when the school weren't doing dress up. She told her mum it was dress up for world book day, sil didn't think anything of it as this is common and it was the right day that niece mentioned. Turns out the school did something totally different that didn't involve dressing up...

They put my niece in uniform from the spare uniform supply, no harm was done and SIL always checks the letters now!

One of our local schools did WBD yesterday. I find it odd when they do it on a totally different day. Why not just do something else that doesn't involve dressing up if you don't want dress up days close together?

My kids WBD was today. And I had to check and ask so many times.
This is the thing I hate about school events/occasions.We have plenty of school around and most of the time my kids school are not in sync with the others . I'm always questioning myself if I have the right dates.

Kids school is now so techy they hardly give out news letters. We receive things through e-mail or text. Even still mostly they will let us know the day before or just a few days so i'm going nuts to get their costumes together.

They have FB but nothing is really there. When they do post its usually posting about something that has already happened.

I had no idea until midnight last night, and if it wasn't for MN, my son would have turned up in regular uniform. I had a bit of a panic on the way to the school - DS was wearing a Gruffolo onesie - and I didn't see a single other child in fancy dress (it's a fairly quiet route), and I thought "Bugger! I've got it wrong and they're going to think I just couldn't be arsed to get DS dressed!" Thankfully, on arrival, all the other children were dressed up. Thank God for Mumsnet!

Dds isn't til tomorrow, when I checked Facebook this morning and saw photos of everybody's kids dressed up I thought I had the wrong day!

you won't be the only one - I've taken DD to school in uniform on a non-uniform day before and I've seen other parents taking accidentally dressed up kids on non-event days when they've gotten confused - of all the things, don't sweat it. Pick your DD2 up with a treat and have a laugh about it.
