Cottage pie AIBU

AIBU to cook a cottage pie now, give the kids some, and then bung it back in the oven later for grown ups?

I seem to remember something about not cooking meat twice. Is that an old wives tale?

You can re-heat most food as long as it's bubbling hot.

It won't be dangerous but it might be dry.

I do this every time!! You are reheating it later not cooking it.

Peculiar to cottage pie I think. If not heated up properly the second time it can make you really ill.

Reheating something isn't cooking it twice?

I regularly batch cook cottage pie, so cook it freeze and then re cook.

Just don't put it in the fridge until it is properly cooled down.

Why would that be peculiar to cottage pie? It's just meat and potatoes...

Ok, thanks everyone. I am going to do this & am sure we won't get ill.

P.s. Sorry if you clicked on this thinking it would be a question about some kind of cottage pie sex or other more exciting issue!

I do this all the time - if you have smaller baking dishes you could separate out half for the kids and have a separate cottage pie for the adults to put in the oven later but as long as it's hot on second heating it'll be fine either way.

It will be fine! It's mince and potato fgs - enjoy - but as ^ it might be worth putting some water in the baking dish so it doesn't become dry.

Yes, I was going to slug some water in for its second time around.

Ive always reheated cottage/shepherds pie in the past as there is almost always leftovers. As long as its piping hot throughout it should be fine.

It's not peculiar to cottage pie- some very odd old wives tales here!

You can reheat almost anything though seafood is dodgy and never reheat rice.

The rule is make sure it's piping hot. Put it in the fridge after giving it to the kids then reheat thoroughly for yourselves later.

Or- as someone suggested, and I do this often- make 4 small dishes of it and cook as needed. I used to find individual small dishes really useful for meals at different times.

I have no idea Molly, but had heard cottage pie can be dodgy if reheated, as OP obvs has. Which was confirmed once when my neighbours made cottage pie for around 20 people on the Saturday to serve for lunch on the Sunday, most of those were ill on Sunday night/Monday morning with most of their guests apparently saying to them afterwards you should never reheat cottage pie! Saying it accusingly I believe
....

So I do reheat personally, but make sure it is absolutely piping hot.

We do this all the time , DS only likes my mums cottage pie so she makes it in the morning and I bring it home for his evening meal , we just make some gravy to go with it .

Well I had heard that if was in effect peculiar to cottage pie, so I'm always careful on reheating.

Report
blackcherries · 01/03/2017 14:27

you can reheat rice, I always do it, as long as it's cooled quickly in the first place. it's not the reheating that's dodgy, it's leaving it out un-cooled in the first place. www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/can-reheating-rice-cause-food-poisoning.aspx?CategoryID=51

Honestly I'm amazed at the amount of nonsense that's spouted about reheating food!
(I thought the AIBU was that you were making cottage pie with lamb not beef, or shepherd's pie with beef not lamb!)

As long as it's heated through properly it'll be fine although I prefer mine cold anyway

I used to make a massive shepherds pie and cut two portions out to cook for the kids and cook the rest later for me and the parents.

Report
AdoraBell · 01/03/2017 14:43

No problem, but I would cover it tightly with foil to stop it drying out.

Report
DJBaggySmalls · 01/03/2017 14:46

If its made with beef, not pork or poultry, thats safe to do.

That's fine, we often do this if we're not hungry when the dc eat. It might be a it dry so if you can make up a bit of gravy to go with it.

Grin at cottage pie sex. I have clearly led a sheltered life as that was not at all what I was thinking. Presumed it would be using a different type of mince question.
