To have taken back my walnut whips?!

I've NC'd as this is a bit embarrassing. I rarely shop in M&S as I can't afford to but went in this lunchtime as they often have a few reduced items. I spotted two single packet walnut whips on the end of an unused conveyor belt - they had various reduced things on there. I picked them up and had a look at them, saw they were 30p which is fab! I love the 'whippy' bit and their chocolate is amazing IMO.

My phone rang and I put them back down on the end of the checkout (it's hard to explain the logistics), but so they were close to me. It was an important call so I couldn't really rush the person off the phone as I saw this happen - a couple aged about 60ish who had been looking at said reduced items nearby took the walnut whips and put them in their basket. I was so pissed off, as this couple were near me when I was looking at the whips and I only put them down to get to my phone. They were right next to me so I thought it was obvious I'd 'claimed' them.

Ok I'm a bit ashamed but I subtly followed them and when the phone call finally ended and they were busy sifting through some pasta products I took the walnut whips out of their basket and didn't look back!
Quickly got to self checkout and paid for them then half-ran out of the store and to a shop a few doors down.

I feel really guilty and can't bring myself to eat them, am I a horrible person?!

Go you!

ImperialBlether Tue 28-Feb-17 19:53:02

I'd do a lot more than that for an M&S Walnut Whip!

SquinkiesRule Tue 28-Feb-17 19:53:49

Sorry but that is very funny. Mean but funny.

Sparklingbrook Tue 28-Feb-17 19:53:55

grin Good on you their walnut whips are lush. I bet they were confused when they got to the till.

BrieAndChilli Tue 28-Feb-17 19:54:07

To be fair to them they probably thought you had changed your mind.

LouiseTM Tue 28-Feb-17 19:54:10

Hahah that made me laugh, you enjoy your walnut whips and dont think twice about it.

Mooey89 Tue 28-Feb-17 19:54:13

I actually took a sharp intake of breath!!!
OP you have some balls, I am equal parts horrified and in awe of you.

Chloe84 Tue 28-Feb-17 19:54:26

Well, you had them first, but why on earth didn't you put them on your bit of the conveyor belt or in your basket?

I wouldn't have plucked them out of their basket. But it's done! And you feel bad so won't do it again. Eat them guilt free.

PolaDeVeboise Tue 28-Feb-17 19:54:36

Hilarious. The Cappucino ones are my crack.

LegoCaltrops Tue 28-Feb-17 19:55:15

Brilliant. Enjoy them and don't feel guilty!

TheJiminyConjecture Tue 28-Feb-17 19:55:24

I love this!

M&S walnut whips are the business so YWNBU!

The couple in questions will have learnt a valuable lesson today - keep your eyes on the prize. grin

ObviousChild Tue 28-Feb-17 19:56:02

Probably, but its really funny and in my book that makes it ok.

AlwaysTheWinner Tue 28-Feb-17 19:57:01

They were YOUR walnut whips. Totally reasonable IMO. I hope you enjoyed them!

Sparklingbrook Tue 28-Feb-17 19:57:07

I am now pondering going down to the M&S garage to get some right this minute after all this.

MrsA2015 Tue 28-Feb-17 19:57:42

This is brilliant

andontothenext Tue 28-Feb-17 19:57:50

Normally I'd laugh but I kinda think it's a bit weird.

Idontevenlikewalnuts Tue 28-Feb-17 19:59:24

These replies so far have helped so much!! I have felt guilty since I did it and have never done anything like it in my life! It just made me so irrationally angry the thought of not having them after finding something reduced and being excited about it.

I should have put them in the basket yes, it was the phone call which distracted me (something to do with an appointment I've been waiting to hear about) and I couldn't seem to get to my phone so just panicked and put them down thinking they were 'safe'.

I've even wondered if it's classed as theft but I'm being silly probably, ok going to eat them now - but not the walnut grin

bumsexatthebingo Tue 28-Feb-17 19:59:26

YANBU. But I'm cringing at the thought of you getting caught hand-in-basket and having to explain you were just stealing them back.

TheWeeBabySeamus1 Tue 28-Feb-17 20:00:43

Nah, it's not weird. If she'd followed them home and pinched them out of the cupboard while they were sleeping, that would be weird (but still completely reasonable wink).

bumsexatthebingo Tue 28-Feb-17 20:01:15

Since they probably didn't realise they were yours maybe you should have just taken 1 so you had one each.
They might be at home now giving each other the silent treatment convinced the other one has scoffed both grin

Idontevenlikewalnuts Tue 28-Feb-17 20:02:13

andtothenext it is weird, yes. I've weirded myself out tbh.

Mm yes Pola cappucino ones are lovely too! And salted caramel ones - those I would have physically fought over smile
