Round at the MIL & FIL visiting and DH left a tub of babys formula on the kitchen side when he made a bottle up for baby. Few hours go by and it's time for us too leave. I notice the baby formula isn't in the bag, ask DH where it is. He goes and searches the kitchen and comes out confused that it wasn't in there. Me, DH and MIL spend the next few minutes searching with no luck. MIL asks FIL has he saw the baby formula, he responds don't think so. We say are you sure and describe the box. He tells us
" what the empty one you left on the side? I took it outside with the rest of the recycling "

DH told his dad that it wasn't empty, how did he not notice when he lifted it up. His dad just started muttering too himself. Poor MIL went outside to see if she could salvage it but FIL must have pushed the boxes down as you do too make more room, so a squished formula box with a lot of it leaked it.

MIL is mortified and has offered to give us money too replace it, we have refused as it wasn't done purposley, just a " oops sorry silly me " of FIL would do. But apparently our fault for putting the formula on the side. Now we have the fun of tracking down baby formula on a Sunday evening when supermarkets and chemists are closed. Thank god for corner shops and garages being open!

AIBU too think FIL was being a bit giddy with his recycling or was it out fault for leaving it on the kitchen side?

side note - MIL manages too contain her recycling urges when it comes to DC baby formula box

YANBU. The boxes have a decent weight to them when they're more than half full.
In any case, FIL should have opened it and checked, or asked one of you before throwing it out. I'd be annoyed too.

BWatchWatcher · 26/02/2017 17:18

Easy mistake to make.
We're all only human.

Artandco · 26/02/2017 17:20

Easy to do

Also, if your baby is formula fed, do you really only have access to one box of formula? Plus why would you take whole box out for the day, surely you decant into a smaller box

SpaceDuck · 26/02/2017 17:22

How much formula was left in the box?

If only a little bit then I suppose it is hard to tell there's anything left in it but surely you would just open it to have a quick check anyway just in case Confused

Oldraver · 26/02/2017 17:22

Depends if he has form. My Dad used to get arsey over stuff like this, everything has to be his own way, nothing can get in the way of his way of doing things, so in a situation like this he would chuck the box in a fit of pique.

Only you know FIL and if it was a mistake...or maybe he is getting forgetful/confused

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 26/02/2017 17:22

Just a mistake, does it matter?

Sirzy · 26/02/2017 17:23

It was a mistake. Sounds like it may have accidentally been left where the recycling normally is.

Frustrating but not the end of the world.

Mumzypopz · 26/02/2017 17:24

He should have checked. It would annoy me too.

BumWad · 26/02/2017 17:25

Meh.

Not worthy of a thread even on MN.

Surely you would have backup boxes at home?

How the heck do you think women managed when there was no Sunday opening at all?
(and there was more bottling feeding then)

Soubriquet · 26/02/2017 17:27

Absolutely he should have checked

My dh has form for this

He once threw £40 in the bin because he didn't open an envelope to check money was there. He gets wrapped up in his cleaning and doesn't bother to look

Luckily i spotted my envelope was missing and manage to get my money back before it went missing

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/02/2017 17:27

Annoying as that's probably a fiver in the bin. And yes, most people formula feeding would have only one box of formula at a time because it's a tenner a box and it only lasts a few weeks after opening. We never decant into a smaller tub if visiting family, in case we need more feeds or get delayed etc.

I'd be very annoyed but would smile sweetly and not let it cause a row. There's worse that could have happened but I'd be cross that I had to go searching and probably pay even more than normal to get it from a petrol station or small shop.

BillDoor · 26/02/2017 17:28

Yes he should have checked.
My MIL threw away an old tin of green tea without checking with me. It belonged to my parter that died suddenly years ago. I was fucking devastated. How about it just go round throwing out her random shit?
It's disrespectful to throw something out that doesn't belong to you.

Littlepiglittlepig3letmeIN · 26/02/2017 17:28

All these evil baby holding, formula chucking PIL's around.
What to do?

dingdongthewitchisdead1 · 26/02/2017 17:34

Yabu
It was an accident
Get over it
You will pick up another tin at your nearest garage
Can't believe you took to mumsnet with this

BoomBoomsCousin · 26/02/2017 17:35

If he was recycling it he should have checked it to clean out all the dregs anyway. You shouldn't but food soiled products in recycling. But, I think it is kind of easy to assume something is finished when you are in clean up mode. I just seems like an accident to me - a very annoying one from your perspective though.

VimFuego101 · 26/02/2017 17:36

Easy mistake to make I guess, but if it were me I'd be apologetic and doing my best to help track down a new tub for you.

DonaldStott · 26/02/2017 17:38

Wow. Mountain. Molehill.

theBaldSoprano · 26/02/2017 17:39

Give the OP a break, the forum is for everything, if you think the subject of the thread is beneath you, then move on.

Yes he was silly, you were reasonable enough not to accept their money, hope you found formula easily enough.

I hate the "how did people manage before"? Well, they planned according to their current situation, and so do we. If we did not have fridges or electricity 24/7, we would be living differently. Because things are accessible easily, not everybody piles on boxes of formula just in case.

TiredBefuddledRose · 26/02/2017 17:40

It was a bit silly of him but hardly the end of the world, although a nuisance it's hardly a malicious deliberate act.
As for the difficulties finding formula on a Sunday - try a co-op or spar or nisa or similar or any of the 100s of tesco express and similar that open late on a Sunday. Unless you live in the outer hebrides it's a 10 minute job.

In future keep a spare unopened tub in the cupboard, you could easily forget the opened one somewhere or knock it over etc.

I don't know if you've an axe to grind against your fil or you've had a stressful day but you're over reacting.

EustaceClarenceScrubb · 26/02/2017 17:42

I think it is more that FIL is not apologetic and is trying to blame DH for leaving it in the wrong place, if he had said a quick sorry then maybe the OP would not feel so aggrieved.

Littlepiglittlepig3letmeIN · 26/02/2017 17:43

It doesn't matter what decade you're in if you're not feeding the baby yourself, and formula is important, you make sure you have backup boxes.

I know it won't help your formula problem, but he may learn for next time - Sadly all of the stuff in the recycling bin will now have been contaminated with formula and have to go into landfill, so he's not done himself any favours either. Even if he gets the bin past the recycling collectors, the sorting station will put the lot into landfill, and possibly all of the loads in the same skip or van as well.
I know round here the recycling bin would not be emptied at all if the collectors detect anything vaguely food-related or non recyclable in there. They just leave a note on the bin saying you have to remove everything and fully clean it before the next collection date if you want it to be emptied next time.

highinthesky · 26/02/2017 17:46

Men are typically selfish. As long as they get fed the rest can go to hell.

My own father is the same. He goes mad about the amount of space 4 pints of ff milk takes in his fridge, the LO isn't yet 2 and still gets through a lot. I'd rather not take her there tbh.
