This is about London so no comments on how crap and expensive it is from non Londoners.

Aibu to get annoyed when people describe places that aren't London as London?
Sidcup and Bromley are in Kent!
Croydon is in Surrey!
Stratford is Essex!

Living in these areas is suburban. It's not living in London is very different it's suburban living.

Yes the tube map is huge just because it's on the tube doesn't make it London the metropolitan line goes to something like zone 6 I think it's further away than Brighton is the other way.

OP posts:

It is a bit odd. I live in Zone 2 so am definitely in London. I thought Croydon was in London - isn't it in "Greater London"?

PollyPerky · 24/02/2017 10:57

Life is short OP.
Why waste energy on semantics? Why are you bothered?

FWIW Croydon is in Surrey and the other places you mention are where you've said, but for example on some salary scales they probably come under Outer London or Greater London re.living allowances.

Olympiathequeen · 24/02/2017 10:57

My SIL and DB live in Wellington and it's described now as greater London whereas is used to be Surrey. I used to live in Epsom and think the whole of Surrey will soon be London.

HakeLively · 24/02/2017 10:58

Stratford is zone 2/3 now so I would say more London than Essex, the old borders have changed and expanded.

Applebite · 24/02/2017 10:58

I feel sorry for people who fly to "London Luton" and then find themselves in Luton - quite a few miles from where they thought they were going to be!

Yep. Likewise Southend. More generally though, I'm bemused when places like Croydon are described as London but we're a sprawling city and that implies expansion out (rather than up, like other places).

I'd never think Stratford was in Essex. I guess a lot of it is subjective.

Floggingmolly · 24/02/2017 11:05

The whole of Surrey will soon be London? Confused

DameXanaduBramble · 24/02/2017 11:06

Olympia, do you mean Wallington?!

Yep, growing up Croydon, Sutton were both in Surrey, now South London. I think they're more London than Surrey. Agree lots of Surrey is morphing into London. Don't agree with Epsom though, it has its own unique feeling which isn't london-infied at all. Places like Guildford will always be more Surrey then London.

MissMooMoo · 24/02/2017 11:06

I live in Stratford and I def would not say its Essex! I can be in the city of London in 10 minutes.....

JonSnowsWhore · 24/02/2017 11:07

Stratford is definitely nowhere near Essex 😄

Pseudonym99 · 24/02/2017 11:07

Bromley, Croydon, Stratford etc ARE in London, and have been since 1965. By your reasoning, Battersea is also in Surrey, Deptford in Kent and Knightsbridge is in Middlesex. Of course, Middlesex hasn't existed since 1965 either, when all the boundaries were moved and London was extended to include all the aforementioned places.

alphabook · 24/02/2017 11:07

Stratford isn't Essex, the postcode is E15/E20 and is Zone 3. Some places in north east London still have Essex postcodes from the days before London expanded but I don't think I would ever count Stratford to be part of Essex!

savagehk · 24/02/2017 11:07

Oxford's 'airport' was trying to brand itself 'London Oxford' a while back Grin

OuchBollocks · 24/02/2017 11:08

London has expanded a lot. Croydon is a London borough, is served by London buses and policed by the (London) Metropolitan police. Stratford (London borough of Newham) is zone 2!! Sidcup is LB Bexley and Bromley is LB Bromley. They are officially, for the purposes of policing and governing, London. London isn't just zone 1 and Islington and artisan delis. It's that big sprawl round its edges too.

BillSykesDog · 24/02/2017 11:08

They're in Greater London. They're London Boroughs which do not come under Kent or Surrey's councils.

This has been done to death and nobody ever gets an answer everyone can agree on.

DameXanaduBramble · 24/02/2017 11:08

Morden, Wimbledon, these were both Surrey too, now very much S London.

DameXanaduBramble · 24/02/2017 11:09

I'm from a village that is served by London buses. It is very much Surrey.

pinkdelight · 24/02/2017 11:10

Croydon is a London borough, as is Bromley. Stratford is in the London borough of Newham. They are policed by the Met. They are in London. End of.

HakeLively · 24/02/2017 11:11

Agree, I'm a London Borough severed by all that goes with it, zone 3 in what back in the day would have been Surrey. Cities expand- back in the day there wouldn't have been 8 million people living here...

ambereeree · 24/02/2017 11:11

Stratford is real london. But yes agree: someone i know lives in watford and says they live in london....

The80sweregreat · 24/02/2017 11:13

My in laws live in Newham and that is classed as East london. My dad
was always Essex , on the borders of east london, but when i see the local london news it is always referred to as East london now as well. postal address is essex still.
They havent messed about the rest of essex - yet.

Bragadocia · 24/02/2017 11:14

I grew up in Twickenham, and always defined it (and was told by others), "yeah but it's not really London". To me, the southern border is about half a mile beyond the south circular. And there it will stay.

In 1939, it peaked at 8.6 million! They were crammed in.

Nydj · 24/02/2017 11:16

Just like to point out that London is a big city with many, many facets including suburbs. Many of those suburbs are in London and London living is not a singular thing - it is perfectly possible to live in London and at the same time live in a suburb - millions of us manage it.
