AIBU?

To not take a person seriously if they have a snapchat filter on their profile picture

Snapchat has to be the worst of all social media. But what is with the countless profile pictures with the butterflies around the head? Filtered to within an inch of their lives.

I cannot take someone serious as a sensible adult if they have a pouting snapchat selfie as their picture.

And if they use this monkey emoji 🙈 even less so.

Yanbu
But as a side I would love a thread on mumsnet where we put a filtered photo of ourselves, it would hardly be outing Wink

toolonglurking · 22/02/2017 10:15

YES!!! A few of my friends on facebook have snapchat photos as their profile photo and 100% judge them for it.
I know two who often post photos of their babies snapchatted to look like deer(?) as well as those awful butterfly ones Hmm

MrsJayy · 22/02/2017 10:19

I loved the # no filters from last year was very funny where clearly they had filters meh it is just facebook i dont take it seriously anyway if somebody wants to have a filtered face with flowers and butterflies then I can't get worked up about it, however I think the whole selfie thing self absorbed

Bellerophon · 22/02/2017 10:19

YANBU

To me it's a signal that they're a certain type of person. Anyone who has the flower garland one especially, and the dog one.

MrsJayy · 22/02/2017 10:20

I dont think anybody over 25 should have snap chat it is bloody irritating

Floofborksnootandboop · 22/02/2017 10:26

I had a Snapchat filter in my profile picture for a little while but it was with my 16 yo DD and she was the one who took it, does that mean i get away with it? Grin

Never used the 🙈 Don't get it at all so I will agree with you on that one.

Crunchyside · 22/02/2017 10:27

I cannot take someone serious as a sensible adult... maybe they don't want to be taken seriously as sensible adults?

Maybe they want to express themselves in a fun, frivolous and childlike way as a bit of escapism from mundane reality of responsible adult life...

If they want to make a silly picture of themselves covered in pink butterflies or with puppy ears or whatever, I wouldn't judge, life is too short to worry about other people taking you seriously. It's just a bit of harmless fun even if it's not a very sophisticated look Wink

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 22/02/2017 10:29

Is it only me who can't be bothered to give two fucks about how my friends choose to present their profile pictures? So they like sparkly halos and butterflies? Meh.

MrsJayy · 22/02/2017 10:31

Yes if your child filtered that is allowed 😊 what is the 🙉 emoji about ?

Mrsglitterfairy · 22/02/2017 10:44

This makes me laugh so much. Why does it matter to you what they have? Maybe people see you as a boring stick in the mud who is no fun! I don't want to be taken as a sensible adult all of the time and yes I have Snapchat pictures of myself. Most of my profile pics tend to be of me & DH or dcs but sometimes I'll throw caution to the wind and have a giggle.
Maybe I'm just being really silly though 🙈

Monkey emoji is meant to be cute, like 'oh, stop it' kind of thing....

Teens, I don't see a problem with filtered pics. But it's a bit immature for adults. My 16 yo DD was actually expressing disdain the other day about people her age who use Snapchat filters in their profile pics, saying it's "so immature and the only people who actually do it now are 12 year olds".

MrsJayy · 22/02/2017 10:49

Nothing wrong with being silly is there people take Social media to serious snapchat is still annoying though

ImNotOkayyy · 22/02/2017 10:50

I currently have the one that makes me look like a puppy. I love snap chat. The little ones think it's hilarious seeing themselves transformed.

And I don't want to be taken seriously either. I'm anything but! Grin

MrsJayy · 22/02/2017 10:50

Oh right im out of touch obviously on the emoji speak

Blinkybell · 22/02/2017 10:52

It's Facebook. It's not meant to be taken seriously is it? I don't want to be a sensible adult anyway

I don't have snapchat, but my profile pic is a selfie of my cat.

Blinkybell · 22/02/2017 10:53

Oops, that should have said 'social media' rather than Facebook

LaurieMarlow · 22/02/2017 10:56

I cannot take someone serious as a sensible adult

This is very much not the point of snapchat. Snapchat is escapism, play, fun. If you want to see their 'serious adult' look on LinkedIn.

People use facebook for all kinds of reasons, coming across as a serious adult is not necessarily one of them.

MOISTOWLETT · 22/02/2017 11:02

YABU take off your judgy pants Hmm

foodtime · 22/02/2017 11:05

Really? You sound bitter and jealous OP.

TwatteryFlowers · 22/02/2017 11:11

I don't use snap chat tbh so I don't know what the difference is between that and Photoshop? I use ps all the time on all my photos, regardless of what they are or who is in it and my fb profile pic at the mo is one of me where I have made it look like a coloured pencil sketch using those NIKS plugin filters on ps. Is that just as bad? There are no butterflies it sparkles and you can still see my wrinkles.

DisneySenior · 22/02/2017 11:15

I'm 28 and haven't got a clue how to work snapchat, my friends don't use it either. I see it as an app aimed at teenagers and wannabe "models".

I'm too ugly for selfies anyway 😂😂

Tbh though I do think yab a little u. Fb is kind of like your own little corner of the internet for you to show yourself off in the way you want to be seen and to hide what you don't. I don't think it's about being adult and serious - there are other social media platforms for that.

Dawndonnaagain · 22/02/2017 11:24

Meh, can't get worked up about it, it's a bit of fun, not a sodding passport photo.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 22/02/2017 11:26

Personally I can't take someone seriously as an adult if they even have the faintest idea what the fuck a "Snapchat filter" is.
