AIBU; Sanity check, John Lewis refusing to price match

So, trying to buy a turntable to play 76rpm jazz records for my father's funeral. Found a good one on Which, and I was going to buy on John Lewis as I normally shop with them. However, £40 cheaper with Richer Sounds. Sanity check please? Are these turntables in any way different? I'm asking John Lewis to price match with the Richer Sounds one, which is, according to Which, the same model only £40 cheaper. It's for my father's funeral - hoping to play his 76 rpm jazz records. John Lewis have refused, claiming they are different models. I seem to remember seeing something similar on Watchdog. Apparently John Lewis wouldn't price match Richer Sound as the RS price can vary depending where you are in the country.

Why not just buy the one from Richer Sounds, and leave John Lewis out of it?

I would just buy it from Richer sounds - I shop a lot at JL but for things AV stuff RS would be my first stop ahead of JL.

Richer sounds are great, just buy from them. No idea why JL won't match, unless Richer Sounds have a different price in store.

We only price match to certain criteria.... ten Mile radius,in stock currently, not online or on offer etc

John Lewis price match is a con, as you've discovered. Richer Sounds are the place to buy audio, so just buy it from them.

Firstly- sorry for your loss OP it sounds like you are being extremely thoughtful

I used to work for John Lewis- their price match isn't a con at all…I spent a lot of time filling out forms for price matches and our shop floor price was dropped if it was indeed matched. Sometimes people bought and then were refunded when it was checked out by the people who do the checking out, sometimes I'd be 'allowed' to phone a shop myself to see if it was in stock and the manager would reduce there and then.

The general thing is that the item needs to be identical in every way, and in stock. It seems that this applies in this circumstance. However, I did notice it said 'all our web prices are valid instore'. That could mean that if you went into a store it could say on the ticket £300, but you could say "I saw it on your website for £249" and they'd have to honour it. But then I doubt it would be a John Lewis price match as the item would not be offered to all walk in customers at that price- they would have to know to ask. That's the only reason I can think of for refusing the price match.

Personally speaking if you live near a Richer sounds I'd get it from there as I'd always had good experiences there, and then fire off a letter of complaint if the web price is actually the same as in store to JL when you have the time, you might get some vouchers out of it.

Agree Richer Sound are great, I am actually subscribed to their catalogue, but it's just easier to buy everything from John Lewis and then I can take everything BACK to John Lewis when (if) it breaks!

Glad everyone agrees that I am not going mad! Feel like I'm losing my marbles anyway this week without all this!

But price match is very disappointing. I've been eyeing those signs for 40 years and now the first time I try to use it they make me fill in a great long form and then fob me off! Really not good enough!

Refused to price match the same model number camera for me too. Price match is only suits them. Bought £20 cheaper down the road same day, same colour, same model number. Did complain but was ignored. Mis leading advertising!
