To be upset that I look my age!!

Finally happened, a pupil was trying to estimate my age and went for one two years older! Always been thought to be at least 10 years younger AND I've lost stones in weight. Obviously my roots need doing!

I love it when my 4/5 year olds play guess my age Grin. I've had from 20 up to 32, I'm 48 and I know s lot of them can't comprehend those numbers but I'll take anything , ha!

How old was the pupil.

PovertyJetset · 21/02/2017 08:29

Doesn't count unless it's a peer.

EmeraldScorn · 21/02/2017 08:40

My niece thinks I'm 99 and that her granny (my mum) is 20 but she's 4 and every time someone asks her what the time is on her "Elsa" watch it's surprisingly always the same time, "99 minutes o'clock".

People are funny with numbers, especially children but you've got to love the cuteness of it!

daydreamnation · 21/02/2017 08:45

The children in my class would normally put me between 8-10, they are 4/5 and everything is based on height/size and I'm tiny! Amusingly when my 15 year old dd came in to help on a school trip, they presumed she was my mum as we look very alike but she's 5 inches taller than me!
How old are the children you teach op?

Trills · 21/02/2017 08:45

When people say "Oh you don't look your age" they are not giving you a compliment.
They are saying "I think that 45 is ancient and crone-like and decrepit, and you are not those things, so you can't look 45".

They are not complimenting you, they are revealing their thoughts about your age.

Tinabn · 21/02/2017 08:46

He is 13 and very bright- he was working out whether I'd still be working at the school when he became head!

You know what, this used to bother me (at the ridiculous age of 25, how scarlett o'hara!).

Then my adored and wonderful DM died really suddenly at 54. Now I just think who cares how old you look - it means you're alive and here!

That being said, I am quite smug that I got a good skin gene so do have much younger looking skin (although it may be lard pushing them all out from underneath). I am less smug about the premature grey hair gene, that bastard has cost me a fortune since my early 20's.

  • them being wrinkles
puppysurprise · 21/02/2017 09:03

13 year olds aren't good at guessing adults age. I've been told I'm really old at least 20 and 40 by them!

NeeNahh · 21/02/2017 09:05

My boyfriend's 7 year old guessed I was 50. I'm 32.

harderandharder2breathe · 21/02/2017 09:09

Children and teenagers are terrible at guessing age, don't take it to heart

My Guides generally think I'm in my early 20s (I'm actually early 30s), which I enjoy. I do suspect a big factor is that the other leaders are both much older than me (late 50s/early 60s) so I'm young in comparison

Ujjayi · 21/02/2017 09:26

Don't be upset! As a PP has said, age is nothing. It's living that matters. And teens are so poor at estimating age. My 16yo DS is convinced I'm much older than all the women in the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills series (I'm not. It's just they can afford botox). And yet other teens see me as younger: when I returned to college at 40 in a class populated by young women under 20. On our first day, bravest (gobby-ist) of the young 'uns asks me "Miss, I ain't bein' funny or nuffin' but how old are you?" When I told them their eyes were popping out of their heads 😆 "Blimey! We thought you were mid-20's! Not THAT old!"

Whatthehellhashappened · 21/02/2017 09:34

My friends 12 year old guessed my age at 36 the other day. I'm 37. I was pathetically grateful 😂

Trills · 22/02/2017 07:48

This teen was not poor at guessing ages though.

Two years wrong is better than most adults can do for another adult.

budgiegirl · 22/02/2017 08:11

Don't worry about it, kids are rubbish at guessing ages.
My cubs asked if I was in any of the photos of our home town that we were looking at - they were from the 1890's! And I'm not entirely convinced they were joking.

halcyondays · 22/02/2017 08:50

When I was 13 all teachers looked pretty ancient to me, I wouldn't have had a clue how old they were. Nowadays I can't believe how young some of them look. But two years out isn't much either way.

I was once asked by a child if I was 50, which was not very flattering as I was mid 30s, until I realised it was because I was drinking out of a mug with "Happy 50th Birthday" on it!

Tinkerbec · 22/02/2017 08:54

Ask another pupil you need to take an average.lol

I have been guessed at anywhere between 30-65. I think they just see us as all old.

The other day I asked what mass was measured in?
Blank faces

So I would say I am 65.... what?

One pipes up Stone!!! Guess I walked into that one.

ImNotFatICanSeeMyFeet · 22/02/2017 09:01

I had a teenager do the whole 'oh my goodness are you 37, I totally thought you were 22' thing to me last week. This teen knows I have a 15 year old so I figured I was into the age range where I have to have my ego massaged a bit because I am that old now Grin

A while back I went out with my friend who prides herself on looking at least 10 years younger than she is (she doesnt, she looks lovely, but she also looks her age) and she continually asks everyone how old they think she is, it's actually embarrassing. The poor guy she asked looked like a rabbit caught in headlights, then told her she looked 42 (she is 38). She was horrified and has never asked anyone since.

5moreminutes · 22/02/2017 09:02

Of course YABU Grin

When I was teaching (pre having my own DC, aged about 28) I was slightly taken aback when a year 8 girl came into tutor group time and said "Oh I like your top miss, my nanna has the same one, it's lovely" - she was a sweet child and I'm pretty sure actually meant to be nice, not to indirectly tell me that I looked grandmother age in my late 20s Grin

On a more general note what isith the cult of youth? Who cares if you look your age - own it, surely? If your pupil thinks you are 34, for example, then wrapped up in that for your pupil is the perception of you as a confident and experienced teacher; if he thought you were 24 then given he is so bright and perceptive he'd have weighed you up as being inexperienced and still finding your feet as a teacher.

heron98 · 22/02/2017 09:54

When I was about 13 (in 1996) - I asked my teacher if she could remember the war.

She was horrified.

Looking back she was probably only about 30.

noroomonbroom · 22/02/2017 10:02

I think my teenage son's brain exploded when I told him I was a day younger than Cheryl Cole.
He had just spent the previous 10 mins telling me how ancient I was.
