It seems everything is racist or sexist or homophobic!! You can't say anything without people picking it apart, within the last week I've been told I'm an 'anti feminist' because I choose to cover up with a scarf when I breastfeed In public and also that having a larger bum Is 'cultural appropriation' because I'm a white woman Hmm

Obviously these are all very serious issues but surely we're belittling the real issues by doing this!?

I'm completely confused by this one! In what context was it said? Surely no one, regardless of race, can control the proportion of their bum to the rest of their body?

The woman who told me it was cultural appropriation is one of the women who say everything is racist, she's a white woman trying to look interesting i think. And the lady who told me it was anti feminist was saying trying to be 'nice' encouraging me to nurse without covering up to encourage other women to do the same Confused

Having a big arse is not cultural appropriation.

The point black women make is that certain white celebrities have in recent years been praised for their (fake) large arses when for a long time black women have been mocked for having the same body shape (only natural).

(fake) large arses

How do you fake a large arse - are there implants you can get or something? I have genuinely never heard of this.

Hotfuzzed · 20/02/2017 19:09

It sounds like your friend is a tumblr brand of feminist who doesn't truly understand the ideas she is sprouting and is misconstruing the points.

It is not sexist for you to use a scarf to breastfeed. As a woman you have autonomy over your own body and who sees it.

It is not racist for a white woman to have been simply born with a big arse or to even have one. The legitimate argument is about how society views white womens bodies vs black women.

YouTheCat · 20/02/2017 19:09

The scarf thing is ridiculous. You dress how you want to so you feel at ease.

The arse issue is just laughable.

It's people who bang on about these totally non-issues who make other people go 'oooh look, it's the professionally offended' when they are standing up to casual racism that is getting all the more common these days.

It makes those who actually have a point seem like radical loonies in the eyes of the hard of thinking.

arch you can get implants or do what kim k did and inject fat from the rest of your body into your arse.

Hotfuzzed Well! I feel slightly better about my flat, saggy bum now I know that all those shapely and buoyant celebrity bums might not be the gift of nature!

Report
Hotfuzzed · 20/02/2017 19:17

arch you can usually tell if it's fake because the thighs don't match. Usually natural big bum through exercise or body shape = big/muscular thighs.

You were not being anti-feminist or racist, obviously, in either specific instance you mention, but there's a huge, UKIP-style, leap of logic from those two instances to 'everything's racist or sexist or homophobic' and 'you can't say anything without it being picked apart'. Usually that's the whine of someone who is pissed off at being challenged for racism etc.

TheProblemOfSusan · 20/02/2017 19:36

Yep, all sorts of ways to fake a large arse. Shape of legs usually gives it away - those of us blessed with a naturally buoyant rear generally have thighs you could use as directed columns and shapely calves too. But very sticky out arses on women with slim legs are implants or padding. Beyoncé vs Kim K sort of thing.

Usually the "can't say anything anymore" moaners are saying so because they are part of the dominant group(s) in society and want to keep it that way with everyone else beneath them and anyone who challenges that view is "pc gone mad"

The specific incidences you mentioned are of course ridiculous. It's not anti-feminist to cover up while bf, imo it's anti-feminist for anyone to dictate to a woman whether to cover up or not, it's feminist to fight for women to have that choice and to support them in whatever choice they make.

PP worded the big ass thing better, that black women were mocked for having a certain figure, that was applauded on white women. Having a big bum or not is a fact of nature, the problem is the way society views it according to race, but you having a big bum isn't cultural appropriate.

Nah. I don't for a minute believe anyone actually said that to you. I think you're trying to start a "PC gorn mad" bunfight.
